I've followed this story for a couple years. Wasn't there a big announcement from Google earlier this year claiming that that while Chrome still wasn't as good as Safari with respect to battery life, they'd improved it quite a bit?

I much prefer the UI of Chrome over Safari on macOS (20-15 MBP). But I figured I'd give Safari another try.

Where does this all stand now?

Thanks in advance!

I personally don't find it that bad. I don't do anything that intensive with Chrome, just the casual browsing and what not. I know I can easily pull 3+ hours without worrying about the battery on my 13 2015 MBA.
Then again, my MBA never really leaves the house, so I can always charge it / use when plugged in if need be.
I think the best bet would be to try it out yourself between Safari and Chrome. Go a few days using each like you normally would do and compare the battery life throughout the day ;)
