I'm considering getting VISTA ULTIMATE x32 for my BootCamp partition. I'm using BootCamp primarily for some gaming and to run PPStream (usually I run the latter through VMWare though).

So far I've had XP Pro SP3 installed on my BootCamp partition and it's been alright - couldn't say it was great tho. For example, each time before it booted into the desktop I'd hear this crackling-like sound. A couple of times when I played Dead Space there was suddenly no sound. When I exited the game the sound worked again. Another issue I noticed was when I tried to use Sound Recorder - each time when I tried to save a sound file the program would pop out a msg saying that not enough memory was available to save the file (or something like that). Yeah, no memory with 4 GB RAM? (Ok XP only reads 3, but still...) Also, I didn't have a feeling that XP was running that smoothly on my MBP in general - seemed a bit laggy at times (for my MBP specs refer to my siggy). (Also, for your info: I did a full NTFS format when installing XP.)

Besides, I'm pretty sick of the OLD, crappy looking XP, that's why I'm considering getting "shinier" Vista instead. I could be getting Windows 7, but I guess I'll rather go with Vista since now 2 or already 3 service packs have been released for it. Yes I know XP is tested and supposedly stable and all that but I didn't get the feeling it was all that great and reliable, and besides I'm tired of its looks anyway. :p

Now will VISTA ULTIMATE x32 be good for gaming and overall use now that these SPs have been released? What's the verdict? (I know some people are claiming x64 would be better for gaming, but is it really worthy on a MBP like mine??)

Btw, how much HD space should I dedicate for the Vista partition? I've had 35 GB for XP, will that be enough for Vista if I plan to have about one or two games installed at a time?

If you want to go with Vista, I suggest you go with x64. Most people have gone x64 with Vista. I tried it and it was ok. There were a few issues like the latency issue, but there have been fixes for that.

Have you thought about Windows 7 instead? It comes out in about a month. I have found it takes much less space than Vista and it's a lot faster too.

Yeah, I have thought about Win7 too. At first I was skeptical, because I thought it would be too early to purchase it when it comes out (since one would most likely to wait for SP to have an effective OS). But I was told that Win7 is supposed to be to Vista like Snow Leopard is to Leopard - improved bugs/performance. Is that true?

Also: should I get x64 Win7 then??

Yes, absolutely. Do not waste your money on Vista or XP at this point. Win7 64-bit is miles better than either of them.

Definitely go with Windows 7. Vista is in no way as bad as it has been made out to be but Windows 7 is genuinely nice and strangely fits on an Apple device.

That being said, I've got Windows Ultimate x32 on my 2009 MBP right now as I need it to be used for work also. I'll move to Windows 7 once I have my official copy (don't want to mess around with non activated or rc at work) and when I have updated VPN software.

My only real gripes so far are :

1) No way currently to set boot-camp to SATA in the MBP (nvidia based at least) which is a pain.
2) I may post on this but my 9400M is taking up a massive amount of memory in Vista. Whilst the OS should only see approx 3.5GB being 32bit I'm only getting about 2.7GB available. A quick look at the nvidia properties shows it reserving >1GB and I can't see any way to change that behavior. Either with BC3 or the latest nVidia driver.

Other than that, all works well.

Cheers

Alex

If you buy a retail edition, you will get both discs, 32-bit and 64-bit.

All down to being compliant my company VPN. The Cisco client and the Symantec Endpoint are currently 32bit. To be fair I can't strecth to the 4GB DIMMs for my MBP yet (hope they drop in price, even from crucial) so not the end of the world though would prefer to use x64 as it has always seemed cleaner to me.

Hopefully by Oct 22nd I'll have obtained x64 versions and will then do a clean install of Win 7 x64 (We are rolling out Win 7 this year thank god). Pushing my luck as it is using own notebook at work (my trusty HP is now 3 yrs old and in the current climate I don't see us getting flash new notebooks anytime soon). Plan is to use Windows for most stuff but boot to OSX for itunes/movies to make most of the battery life. Second HDD installed in place of optical working a treat. Now playing my itunes music off the OSX partition from windows using the very nice Zune player (safe in the knowledge it can't make any deletions/changes due to the read only feature in BC 3.0).
