a. Lots of bad reviews on Apple, other web sites (wires coming loose, units just going dead, etc.)
b. Not in stock anywhere -- just ordered one from Apple and they said 2-3 weeks

Are these things really just in that high demand, or is Apple working on fixing issues with them?

Well, mine just went dead about 10 minutes ago. I'll try a different outlet in a wee bit. Some kid with an HP was charging his on the same outlet tho... Do i get this replaced for free since i have AppleCare?

Apple redesigned them this summer. The new ones are smaller and with better strain relief on the thin cord. The comments are most likely about the old ones. Sucks that Apple didn't anticipate demand properly as a charger is not exactly something you can live without.

I'g guess it's a supply side issue; I can't imagine an extra power brick to be in such high demand. For what it's worth, I have both an old (rectangular) and new (square) brick and both have functioned without any problem from day one. I did have to wait about 3 weeks for the new one to arrive, but I had ordered the day it was announced. I'm a bit surprised that there would still be a delay on these.

I agree they should have a better (read: faster) supply channel, but these are all bundled with the laptops too - It's not as if it's a requirement to have a second charger; In fact, I doubt most MB/MBP owners have more than the one included.

i wish computer and cell phone manufacturer would use only standard charger plgds so you can buy a power supply for $10 - 20 at every hardware store worldwide.

my nokia cell phone and my palm zire have that and a charger costs about $4.99 everywhere.
