So why is my hard drive reducing in size?

Ok i have a problem here. I installed virtualbox from sun microsystems in the hope of free dual booting. I tried to create a virtual machine for vista, but it eventually didn't work, it kept on going to the install process.had several attempts with that. I ended up with some different disk configs because of this, and eventually decided to try ubuntu. I deleted these and removed the configurations and that gained me some disk space but its still lowering.

Sorry if i am not making sense.

At the moment, i have just booted in to the leopard disk to repair the disk but there seems to be no problem, however there is. After i had done all of the above, i notice in the finder that the hard disk capacity is getting lower, a megabyte every minute or so. At this rate i'll be out of space for nothing in 5 weeks or so. Its 750GB in total, with 698 formatted with leopard 10.5.4.

I have no idea what's happening and am very worried indeed.

Please help me, I don't want this to be the end of my mac as i know it. (Got a TM backup on hand, fully up to date)

Could be an issue with huge log files. Look through the Console for really, really long logs, and someone else can probably tell you a quick way to figure out which files are taking up too much space.

750 billion bytes is only 698 GB So first off, that is totally normal.

1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte
1024 megabytes = 1 gigabte

No problem,

Now, take a deep breath, step back and write down the capacity of your hard drive before you go to sleep. When you wake up, if you aren't cursed, you will have the same number you have when you went to sleep. I can almost bet you money on it.

I've opened Console but as I am currently doing a disk permissions check, its showing that and i don't see anything related to what you mention. I'll keep you posted - and thanks for the very quick reply!

I should just note, after adding ubuntu to the virtualbox this behaviour has ceased, but i'll wait with baited breath...

Oh yes I know this, that's not the issue. The issue is that after installing and experimenting with virtual machines, my hard disk is reducing in size every few minutes. I know that formatting means that disk sizes are never as quoted

New to mac! Have an os x with 320 GB HD. Some of the programs I use are Linux based and hence need to install fedora (and windows) as virtual machines. have got VMware fusion too!
Is it recommended to partition the HD in order to install VMs? Will the machine slow down if I do this?

I didn't partition my harddrive to install XP and Vista Ultimate, but I did specify a decent virtual disc amount for each whilst setting up the Virtual machines (and yes, i've got VMware Fusion as well.
