...at least until iPhone 99 anyways.

Or will it change to 'iPhone yy' at some point to represent the year it came out, for all those who are status conscious about always having the newest one?

At some point, it's just going to get a bit silly - are we really going to see 'the new iPhone 38' or '87'?
 
I don't really think people will still be using iPhones ten years from now. There will be something else way better than iPhones or any other smartphone. :)
 
Well we aren’t going to use phones forever when brain implants are on the horizon, lol.

I would assume phones will become obsolete by around 2035.
 
The current system has no disadvantages. Why would Apple change it?

Apple sells at least 3 generations of iPhone at the same time. It would be dumb to use the year, not to mention it's a longer number.
