With every iOS upgrade to date since "Hey Siri" was introduced, Apple was polite enough to ask me if I wanted to use it, to which I'd say "no... no thanks." So I upgraded my Xr the other day from iOS 16.x to 17 and... well interestingly I didn't get any prompts. The "Hello" thing afterwards, but I can't think any of any prompts asking me to review a few things. So I'm using my iPhone a little while ago and was doing something or another, I forget what, and I get a "helpful" popup saying I can just say "Hey Siri" to let it help me out. I'm like "Huh?" I try it, and sonova... it's on. Without my permission. 🤬 And not really even notified in a proper manner, certainly not in a timely one. So it's back off again, but what the actual flip, Apple? This is some Microsoft-level BS here.

GRRRR! As I was about to post this, it occurred to me that I had updated my iPad this morning to iPadOS 17 and should check that. Yup. It's on there also now. Same situation... no prompts.

Mine's still off, but there might be a difference: when I first got the phone 18 months ago I let it turn it on, then I manually disabled it. It sounds like you never turned it on in the first place, which makes me suspect it was in some sort of "undecided" state that resolves to Off in 16 but On in 17.

It seems like maybe I've had it on at some point briefly before turning it off, but that would have been some time ago. You may be right about the difference... I figured my experience may not be universally true, but it can't be random either. It's infuriating to have repeatedly set a preference to not use something, only to have said preference quietly discarded to suit the developer's agenda. This in particular is not a trivial thing. Not when these devices are frequently used in areas subject to sensitive conversations (work, home, gangster hideout, crack den, etc) and eavesdropping for even benevolent reasons should be frowned on, and may even be outright banned by the policy of one's employer.

A little different, but I just found that the upgrade had changed my ringtone behind my back. I thought it was someone else's phone at first.

My ringtone here is unchanged. But I use a custom one I got long ago from Ringtone Feeder. Were you using a default one?
