With new Macs, I immediately boot into macOS Recovery and select “restore from time machine” which restores a carbon copy of my backup, restoring the operating system as well.

Now it seems like my backup won’t let me. Does anyone else have this issue?

BE VERY CAREFUL! It took me a day and a half to fix my M1 MBA after I messed around like this...

Start the Mac as normal, and use the Migration Assistant that comes with Set Up Assistant. Don't mess around with recovery, because if you need to erase it it, you will brick your Mac unless you have another one handy (you can't reinstall macOS from recovery yet, you need to use Configurator 2 to fix it if you need to reinstall macOS). There should HOPEFULLY be a fix coming soon (my theory is Big Sur isn't optimised for M1 through Apple's servers just yet).

How exactly does it brick your device? I’ve been erasing my SSD and been rebooting it with no problem so far

Really?! When I was attempting to reinstall, I kept getting the same error message (attached). Basic Apple Support couldn’t help, and even seniors were stumped. Bootable installers failed, I had nothing except configurator.
Bricked is probably the wrong term, but it felt like that!

Yeah, the reinstall part is the problem. I hope you have a second Mac, or someone who can lend you one for a few hours! It's not an easy task, this revival. There's a thread here somewhere (Will find if you want) that explains how to do it. Ignore Apple Support's instructions, they're wrong (they're aware, will fix soon I hope).

Hmm, mine just finished passed that point (of that photo you shared), now it just rebooted. Hopefully no additional errors will occur...

Yeah I think my Mac is restoring with no issues. It’s already doing the progress. Hopefully I don’t jinx myself lol

No issues at all on my mini, restored from Time Machine on a fresh backup from my old 2012 mini.
This worked well i gather?

Been contenplating if I should go clean when my Mini arrives or restore from my TM backup (on catalina) from my 2013 iMac.

After installing macOS again I got 11.0.1, hoping that will fix my compatibility issues, I erased my Mac again; but now I’m getting the same error as you. This is frustrating!!!!

Tell me about it! Like I said, you can fix it with another mac if you have one, but if you don't, I'm not sure that there's much you can do until Apple does something. As I said before, I think it's an issue with the installer files the Mac is trying to download for Big Sur when you do the reinstall, so hopefully they can fix it without causing you too much grief. If it's a more significant problem, you may need to visit the Genius Bar (or a helpful friend) to sort it out. If you need further help with it, let me know, as I've been through the sheer agony of trying to fix this issue!
