Here is a very quick rundown of restoring your already jailbroken 3GS if your currently on 3.1.2 and want to stay there. AND you have your ID on file with Cydia on Saurik's server.

right now im trouble shooting some battery issues on my EARLY model jailbroken 3GS that is not unlocked (ATT) im on a PC and i just want to restore to 3.1.2 again.

right click notepad, open it with administrator privileges
in notepad open the file below
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
simply paste this exact line below to the last line under the last # in the host file:
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

i had to reboot the PC...

you can CHECK to see if its working by going to start, run type CMD then ping gs.apple.com, as long as it returns pings from the cydia server IP number shown above then its working

open itunes hit shift restore point it to your 3.1.2 ipsw and your good to go

run redsn0w after that

special thanks to Dev-team and Saurik for making this possible

Thank you so much!
That worked great!!

I guess we should delete that one line on the file after we are done?
or it doesn't matter?

the only reason i wrote that post, is like a good iphone hacker, before i restored i wanted to research and cover all my bases to make sure i knew what i was getting into, i had a ROUGH idea of what i needed.

what i found was soon i was in a sea of firefox tabs, pages upon web pages of do's and tons of don'ts, probably spent the better part of 2 hours 'just making sure' by means of reading threads, iclarified and Saurik's pages... and when it all boiled down to it, when the host file was set up, it was really a non-event that took a grand total of 20 minutes (max) to accomplish.

and wouldnt you know it, my battery issue seems to be FIXED!
i was getting 3 hours out of a charge out of nowhere?! now it seems to be just fine.

the only thing i didnt re-install was "shrink" but i dont think that had anything to do with it...

im glad it helped someone ;)
