Fellow members,

Here's the deal: my mom's dying and I live on the other side of the world. Before heading back home to be with her, I thought it would be nice to spend what will undoubtedly be our last Christmas together via iSight. (My flight leaves on Jan. 16th.) So I ordered one for my folks from the Canadian Apple store and it arrived a few days ago. The camera turns on and picks up the image of the user but the little camera icon on the buddy list doesn't highlight and it won't allow you to start a video chat. The camera obviously works but there's some problem getting the computer or iChat AV to recognize it.

Any suggestions? (It's a 800 MHz iMac with Panther and, supposedly, all the software updates.)

Merry Christmas,

Squire

P.S. If you're wondering, Mom had been feeling ill and acting in an uncharacteristic manner (i.e. not wanting to socialize and do the things she normally takes joy in). The doctors were stumped and did some more scans and found a brain tumor. The doctors removed that "successfully" and Mom had a new lease on life, it seemed. Unfortunately, tests on the tumor revealed that it was not the primary source. Two and a half months later, they still can't find the primary and cancer has reformed in her brain. To make a long story short, the doctors are giving her a few months.

My intent is not to be a downer on this joyous day. But maybe we should take an extra second to give that hug or handshake this holiday season, especially in the case of loved ones far away.

Oh, and help with the iSight would be nice. Thanks.

*hugs* for your family. I hope that you are able to find ways to be together today and enjoy your time together as a family, and with your mother, and also that the doctors are able to find something more to continue to help her fight against the cancer. The lengths you are going to be there for her on what might be her last Christmas are what the holidays are all about....

As far as your iSight is concerned... are your firewalls configured correctly (both sides)? This support document lists the appropriate ports to open; you can also temporarily open your firewalls altogether. But beware that you need to open hardware firewalls too, for instance, if you are behind a router that contains one. This is something you may have missed, because you do not need to make firewall adjustments for text IM... only for AV.

Anyway, I hope that you are able to have a Merry Christmas together, and that MR can help you in some small way to be close to the people you love! :)

I don't have any advice with regard to the iSight but I wanted to wish you and your mother the best. Don't give up! Just because a doctor sets a deadline doesn't mean it's all said and done with.

Be strong and enjoy your holiday, I wish you and your family the best. :)

It might help if you clarified which chat network you're using your iSight with. And what chat apps both of you are using. Some work better than others.

Good luck - soz I can't be of any more help.

I don't really have any advice to give regarding your iChat AV/iSight problem. Sorry... but I do want to wish you and your family the best. It's good that you have no intent on becoming sad on this happy holiday. I admire that in a person. I hope you figure out the problem with the connection and happy holidays! :D

I had the same issues here for a while and it was the router that was giving it problems. You might want to call tech support on the router and explain the problem. I have a D-Link and they ran me through the procedure (adjusting the packet size) and it worked fine.

my condolences about your mother. my father died of cancer three years ago and I can most definitely agree that it is not fun. sneaky little bugger (the cancer, not my dad. ;))

as for the iSight, are Show Audio Status/Show Video Status checked in the View menu of iChat?

I am sorry to hear about your story. Never give up and try your best to share all the moments you can with your relatives especially during such a season. Unfortunately I can't help you with your problem but I am sure that the suggestions given above by our friends will be of value. Goodluck and Merry Christmas to everyone on MacRumors and beyond

Wow. Thanks everyone. I just woke up here and I'm looking for a blank tape for the camcorder to catch the looks on the kids' faces.

About the iSight problem:

* We're using iChat A/V.
* I have a router but they don't. And they can see my ugly mug when I have my camera hooked up so it's probably not router related.
* Show Audio Status/Show Video Status checked in the View menu of iChat?
Hmm...I don't know. I'll look into it.

Thanks, again and Merry Christmas!
