Hello,

I’m looking for some software or an app to remux some of my media which I previously saved as MKVs. Now that we use AppleTV for our streaming, I want to remux them over to MP4 for native compatibility.

I’ve been looking for some software to do this. Handbrake always encodes so I’m avoiding that. I can’t get Subler to actually do anything. I don’t know if it’s because of HEVC or why but there’s no button to actually save.

I’d like to be able to batch remux, too. I’m having difficulty finding recommendation for good software. I found MP4Tools which looked really promising but sadly, it’s not M1 compatible.

Open source or free is great but I’m open to paying. I just worry about all the options out there and all the software companies that offer “comparisons” of other product with their own being the top choice. I’d love to hear from some folks who have actually used the software/app. Any recommendations?

Not sure about batch processing but I always found Subler offered everything I needed.
Keep in mind, DTS and Dolby True HD have to be converted to AC3 (Dolby Digital / Dolby Digital Plus) to have playable sound on the Apple TV. Everything compatible Subler simply passes through.
In the menu bar click “File“, then there should be an option to save the file. HEVC normally works fine but I don‘t know about the specific HDR variants.

Off topic: For Windows I used XMedia Recode

In case you are more demanding in terms of quality: (Dolby Vision / 7.1 lossless / atmos stuff)

But on Mac, Subler really is the best choice one can get.
I would recommend playing it around and giving it more test.

I got a feeling that this tread is going to end with someone recommending a “great” paid app from the App Store.
So, here is a free one MKV2MP4 https://apps.apple.com/app/mkv2mp4/id585396074

Plex is free for streaming... :)

OP: I would do a little more research as I don't know if I would convert all my files, there maybe another option to play said files via AppleTV that is better then converting all of your files.

Take a look at the list @bogdanw provided.
