I am planning to buy a Powerbook in the US; as I live in the EU, my future OS upgrades (beginning with Panther) will be done in Europe.
Does any one of you know any compatibilty issues between geographical zones?

Only the power supply and modem...
Usually the modem is not "cerified" in other countries, but most of the time they work normally.
OS X (incl. Panther) is "all languages fits on CD's"... so to speak :)
So the CD's are the same in every country.
Only the boxes it is sold in are in different languages, also the Apple Hrdware Test CD.
