Ive had my mac since april or may, i dont remember when it was released :p

Anyway, I love my mac, but as this is my first one I have noticed the speed has gone from 30 seconds to about 65-80 seconds per boot. I have a 320GB hard disc in the iMac with 200GB free. Also have a WD MyBook 500GB connected through my AirPort Extreme. I also noticed the speed of applications loading is quite slow in comparison to the nearly instant loading times when i first got the iMac.

With my PC i just run ultimate defrag and norton + ad aware and its as good as new. What do you do with a mac? Just because there are so many viruses for the PC does not mean that there can be some for the mac? There must be some kind of software for degragging and virus checking etc.

Thanks for your help!

Try repairing Disk Permissions found in Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities).

Their really isn't any thing to run. You don't need to do any thing. You can run repair permissions from within disk utility. Most third party apps, like onyx and leopard cache cleaner, don't do any thing special. That your mac wont already do by it's self.
Often they do more harm than good. With os x you don't need to defrag like on a p.c.
A virus on your mac would not be slowing it down. Their are no viruses that would do that I'm prety sure about that.

Reboot your mac then go in and check your start up log in the console under utilities. Check under all messages and follow your boot log. You can go down the list and see what is taking so long to load.

di you have a lot of login items and menu bar items. this slows boot up. also more software makes it boot a little slower sometimes

This can mean that your hard drive is taking it last breaths... No, I'm just joking. Do you have any programms that opens when you boot your computer (like MSN etc.)? Those slowed down my PC like 5 mins, now I've changed it that they only open when I say so.

Your Mac is still a lot faster than my PC (which take over 8 mins to boot with vista and only 1 ½ mins with Windows 7).

Clean up your HD a little bit, delete programms you don't need

I've noticed a difference after using onyx. However this was after using candybar and switching icons and whatnot. My dock was sluggish and and slow to start apps. Did some maintenece with onyx and she was right as rain.;)

Stick another gb of ram in it? It's quite cheap from the right place that's probably what I'm gunna do :)

Well what do you run on it, torrents? Photoshop?
I would upgrade the RAM to 4gb

There are viruses for OS X too. If you think, 90% of people uses windows and 9% uses OS X, so that means there are hundreds of times more viruses for Windows.

Virus is like a programm but it only harms your computer.

Despite what people say, there really aren't alot of programs that let you configure what's really important under the hood of mac os x.

This is perhaps the thing I find most frustrating about mac os x. Everything is simplified. Both it's best and worst quality.
