Somehow system seem to be getting sluggish. Most noticeable when expanding youtube videos to fullscreen and back to normal window size. There's a screen freeze of 1 - 2 secs.

Are there any software that can clean and maybe speed things up on the mac? Looking at CleanMyMac X, but it's so pricey.

Generally I advise against system cleaning apps there are some that can do more harm than good. I would however recommend OnyX, I have used it for years to rebuild data bases, empty caches and a multitude of other small tasks. Best thing is it's free.
Make sure you get the version for your operating system and simply run the Maintainence script unchanged or make sure you understand any changes you might make.

Before you invest into any mac cleaning software, verify if your hard drive's empty space (Available storage) is at least 20-30% free. For example, if you have a 500Gb hard drive, then you should have in between 100Gb-150Gb of free space. If you have less than that, then your system will become sluggish and as this free space becomes less and less available, it will become even more sluggish. Move those files that you don't use off your internal drive and onto an external hard drive and then run disk utility to verify and repair your permissions. Also check how much RAM you have and what OS are you running. The later and latest OS really need 8Gb of ram minimum, or else you will have constant disk swapping and that can contribute to sluggish performance.

I would NOT use "Clean my Mac".

For general OS-cleaning tasks, try OnyX. It's free:

Having said that, there may be OTHER reasons as to why your Mac is "sluggish".
Tell us what you have:
Which Mac?
What year made?
What kind of drive inside (HDD, SSD, fusion)?
How much RAM?

iluvmacs has a good point:
How much free space left on your internal drive?
