I cannot get software update to work. I constantly comes back as having failed. I can see that there are updates available from the Apple website, but can't get at them. All other internet and email access works fine - anyone having similar problems?
17" Powerbook, OSX 10.2.6

Have you tried the download option? Select the file you want to update and then select the 'Update' menu and then 'Download checked items to desktop'. The run the installer from your desktop.

No files are available to check. The list of files is not retreived. The system says it has failed after only about 3 seconds.
Any ideas? Windows Update is starting to look good!

If you are updating Apps, like iMovie or iTunes, they must be in the Applications folder or else they won't be seen by SU. Even if the are in more specific folders that you have created, and those folders are in the Applications folder, it will still not work. They need to be on the first level.

Good Luck.

It may be that this is not a permanent problem. A search on Apple support reveals that in the case of an incomplete update, that you should download the update from the Apple website and run the standalone updater.

Go to http://www.apple.com/swupdates/

Software update will stop trying to update the broken update because it's now installed and rather look for newer updates. Effectively resetting 'software update'.

You can read more at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695

Hope this helps.

Suddenly working again. No rational explanation, but thanks for the hints.
