Hi everybody. I'm new to the forum and also a new mac user. Like what I've seen so far but still getting used to it. I have a question about intalling and updating software. the Mac I've bought has an old IMovie application - 5.02. I've just tried to install the latest version - (I forget what it is now -6 something) but altugh I could download it it wouldn't let me install as my version is too old. It seems I have to go back and install each update between mine and the latest. Is this true? Are there any ways round thi?

Your advice please.

An iMovie 6.x updater will only update iMovie 6. Major version number upgrades are not free, you would have to buy a newer edition of iLife (but if you consider that, wait until January when they bump the versions).

5.0.2 is the latest version of iMovie 5. An upgrade to iMovie 6 is US$79 and also includes the latest versions of iPhoto, iDVD, iWeb and Garageband.

You can't update iMovie 5.x to iMovie 6.x for free. For the most recent versions of iLife software (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand and iWeb) you'll need to purchase iLife '06. Free downloads are available from Apple only within the version number you purchase.

I think you will need to buy a new version of 'iLife' (Apples suite of music, video and photo apps).

'06 was released last January, so '07 should be released within the coming months.

It is worth it, as you get an Updated iPhoto, iMovie and a few others Apps.

The latest iTunes however, is free - all the time - no need for a paying upgrade.

Once you buy '06 or '07 you will get all the updates for the next 12 months/until a newer version is released - I believe.

It's not within 12 months, there are no time limits. You get free updates for the version number you purchase so if you bought iLife '06 now and iLife '07 came out in January you can't get '07 for free.

For arguments sake, let's say you bought iLife '06 and never upgraded to iLife '07. Then, in 50 years Apple notice something big needs fixing in iLife '06 - you would get that update for free but you wouldn't be able to update to iLife '56 for free - you would need to purchase it.

Yeah, basically why I also said 'Until a newer version is released' - I mean, they are basically every 12 months, right?

Thanks for that though Chundster, maybe I didn't make it clear enough for the OP :) ;)

I like the irony that you further muddled things in your second 'clarification' ;) . As Chundles said, free updates are not limited to only 'until a newer version is released'. 2 new releases could come and go, but if Apple decided to update iLife 05 while iLife 09 is on the shelves the update would be free. The fundamental point is that all point upgrades to a given year of iLife will be free in perpetuity.

I've never experienced an update outside of the new version being released.. didn't want to confuse the OP into thinking that the new version isn't worth buying, as updates will pop up for his year-old version.

I can happen, but I've never seen it so didn't confuse things..

(..or at least try not to  ;) )

Thanks folks. Very useful. Just to clarify one thing.....does that mean when IMovie HD 5.7 is realeased Apple will make 6 available as a free download? Hope so!

I'm not sure what imovie 5.7 is (wasn't the last version 5.02?), but imovie 6 will not be provided for free.

As Chundles and the gang have mentioned:
- upgrades (imovie 5 to imovie 6) are not free, but
- updates (imovie 5.01 to imovie 5.02) = free
