Hello, I am having a problem with my 2011 iMac updating through the app store. I have had Apple engineers look at the problem and they are not much help. The problem is it will not load major software updates. Right now it cannot load iMovie or digital camera raw updates. It starts to load, reboots and craps out saying software could not be installed. The best the engineers can do is to blame it on third party software without being able too identify which software. They tell me to format, install fresh copy of sw and start reinstalling my apps one by one. I can be there for a year doing this. The idea is insane to me. Any ideas? Thanks much.

I agree with dianeoforegon.
As you seem to have tried a number of minor fixes, and if those first steps don't help, I would then continue by reinstalling OS X. This is NOT an erase, just a reinstall, and usually takes 30 minutes to an hour, at most, and the reinstall won't disturb your existing files and apps.
Quickest method to reinstall is to boot to a bootable El Capitan USB installer that you have previously made.
If you need help with that, come back and ask. It's an easy project, and worth your time.
Try the App Store after you reinstall the system. If you have a batch of updates that are offered, only do one at a time.
Quit and relaunch App Store after each large download. The additional time overall, would be minimal, and nothing close to "a year"
If you still struggle, create a new admin user account, then log out of your normal account, and log back in to your new user. Try to install your updates then.
