Sold my 3g & back using 2g but edge not working after restore

it was working when i first went back to using it but i had to restore & the software updated at the same time. Today i noticed i wasnt getting any internet connection outwith wi fi areas.

What can i check to fix this?

Check that you did not lose or corrupt your login details for the cellular data network. It is under Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network.

On O2 mine read:
mobile.o2.co.uk
vertigo

Nope its exactly as it should be

In that case, i'd try restoring the phone again, from DFU mode, just to get it back to "new" condition.
