Hi,

I have received a powerbook A1138 hybrid that hasn't any dvd drive but preinstalled with lubuntu. And today the power supply arrived.

Trying to install leopard now. but there are a few issues.

- Target Disk mode "Press T while booting" doesn't work. It only works when triggered in openfirmware via (target-mode) command. But my G5 can't see any of its partitions.
- Boot menu "Press option(alt) while booting" doesn't work at all

openfirmware menu is working fine, but if I try anything "hotkey" related it falls back to yaboot

What did I already tried.. :
- Reset PRAM
- Remove PRAM battery
- Reset NVRAM
- Used another Apple USB keyboard (from G5)
- Tested the firewire cable with a working iBook | just fine

Someone can help? Please :)

Edit: Fixed. It was a strange one. First of all, I notice that the keyboard uses pressure that enables the circuit for a key. CMD was pushedvery hard through the surface resulting in a permanently CMD press, obliviously booting to target-mode or boot selection woudn't be possible with a pressed key, so I cutted the circuit until I found a solution.

Another issue was that I put in a ibook 2005 IDE disk drive, but it turns out a A1138 is very picky about its 2nd drive, pulled it out again.

It works fine now. Thanks for the help.

"preinstalled with ubuntu", if you mean that the all HD is formatted for Lubuntu (ext4) , then i suppose it's normal.
Mac OS X can't read ext4 linux format, so it can't see it in target mode.
Even Disk Utility doesn't see the HD in target mode ?

No unfortunately its not a normal behavior, the drive doesn't appear in DU on my G5 at all. Yaboot partition should appear in PBs bootmenu too because stock yaboot uses Apple_Bootstrap

Does it still have the original hard drive or has that been replaced? If so, an incorrect master/slave configuration could cause these Target Disk Mode anomalies. I believe the "cable select" setting is best avoided too. What does the drive show up as when booted into Linux? /dev/hda, /dev/hdb or something else?

I opened that powerbook and pulled out the hdd, a genuine apple branded 80gb drive without any jumpers. So it should be cable select, right? Then I hooked it up to a external 2.5 IDE -> USB adapter and installed leopard from my g5 & DU.

Afterwards I booted this drive in a working ibook g4 to make sure everything is good.

Now in that powerbook:
- Booting dont work at all expect to openfirmware
- Target Mode via openfirmware freeze system
- Bootmenu via option(alt) still missing

My guess is: nvram destoryed ...

What's the model number of the HDD? No jumpers sounds right, though.

Maybe worth trying: With the HDD removed, can you boot the PowerBook from a FireWire HDD or another machine in Target Mode?
