I have an iPhone XR and a 2021 12.9" iPad Pro, both with the current version of iOS 15, and and a 2019 27" iMac with the current version of macOS 12. All are signed in with the same Apple ID. I checked my settings for Messages on my iPhone and iPad, and they're identical. My problem is that, for a handful of people in my Contacts, I can no longer send messages to them on my iPad. When I look at the name in the To: field, it's red. When I tap on the name, it says, "[phone number] is not registered with iMessage." If I try to send a text, it says, "Not delivered." I also no longer receive messages from those people. If I try the same thing from my iPhone, the name in the To: field is green. When I tap on the name, it displays the phone number as it appears in my Contacts. I'm able to send and receive messages just fine. Messages on my iMac also works just fine.

I researched the problem online and tried the various suggestions, such as signing out of and back into iCloud on my iPad, turning Messages off and on, and rebooting my iPad. None have worked. There is supposed to be a workaround where you tap on the message or the circled "i" by the message and select "Send as SMS text" (in fact, I remember doing that a couple times in the past for people with Android phones), but that option doesn't appear. I'm wondering if there's some other setting outside of Messages that I need to enable. If it's relevant, I have my T-Mobile phone number as the Send Messages From option on all three devices, and WiFi Calling is enabled. There are only three people in my Contacts for whom I know for sure that this is happening. It happened sporadically in the past for one of them, and I would have been on an earlier iPad and iOS 13 or 14 at the time. Any ideas?

In iOS 14 at least, there’s a little arrow to the right of the name in the “To” field. (The person you’re sending to). Click that arrow and make sure to choose the correct phone number if there’s an option. Sometimes on iOS 14 (not 15) iMessage can’t remember the correct ph number and chooses the wrong one - and the message can’t be sent.

No, there's no other option for a phone number. :-(

Have you tried deleting the contacts for the affected people and setting their contacts up as new? (Just blue skying an idea....)

I tried it with one of the problem contacts, but it didn't work. I also deleted the entire conversation with the person and tried creating a new message. The problem persists on my iPad, and it still isn't present on my iPhone and iMac.

Hmm... Deleting the thread from my iPad didn't delete it from my iPhone or iMac. The thread on my iPad stopped working with that contact in August, whereas it kept going on my iPhone and iPad. It occurs to me that I transferred everything from my 2017 iPad to my 2021 iPad Pro when I bought it about a month ago. I wonder if something got corrupted on my 2017 iPad, and the corruption copied over. If I delete Messages from my iPad and reinstall it, would it copy down the same corrupted data? But if my Messages data is in iCloud, shouldn't the same data be used for all my Apple devices -- in which case, why is the problem occurring only on my iPad?

You're asking very good questions. I have a few more:

1. If you enable forwarding in the Messages settings on either phone or Mac to the iPad, does that work? (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208386)
2. Do you have Messages in the Cloud enabled?
3. On the iPad are Messages enabled under Account > iCloud?
4. Is your iPad Pro cellular and is that number linked to your Apple ID (can be checked at appleid.apple.com)?

It's probably worth deleting messages from your iPad and letting them repopulate from your iCloud to see if that fixes it.

iCloud sync/corruption errors are the worst. For the longest time my wife had an issue where my contact card on her iPad Mini was correct, but on her iPhone instead of my name, it just said "HUSBAND" and this copied over to her messages and phone and everything. We tried *everything* and couldn't fix it.

Then one day - poof - it just worked properly.

Thanks, WildSky and Canyda. I'll check what you mention after work today and let you know.

That was the problem: I originate messages from my iPhone number. Forwarding was enabled for my iMac but not for my iPad. As soon as I enabled it for my iPad, the problem was solved. Thank you!
