Solved: Processor Tray for 5,1 2010 & 2012 the same? (Yes)

Are the processor trays for the August 2010 (Mid 2010) and June 2012 Mac Pro 5,1 the same part number/model?

I'm looking for the dual processor tray part numbers for the 2012's and cannot 100% confirm that they are the same. Everything I'm finding lists "Mid 2010" only, but since they're basically the same machines (just with minor updated specs) I'd assume they should be the same...

While part numbers may have different codes.. the answer is yes.. they are the same.. Why do you think the 2012 looks so much like the 2010? It was only a processor bump.. it uses the same hardware as the 2010 models do.. If you want the 2012, just get one of their w series or x series processors.. Singles would do better with w series.

No change in hardware.. its exactly the same, all Apple did was a bump on processor speed. And whats really sad is how much the single processor board is. When the 2010's came out, I waited until October 2011 and bought the single processor board for 46.00 - I think at that time the vendors were at odds on how to price the parts. Now a single quad 2010/2012 board costs almost as much as a Mac Mini.

no, the Logic\Back Board is different, and the SMC versions wont match, so teh fans will run at full speed.

Not in its present form... If you were to use a 2010/2012(They are the same) without changing the 2009 backplane, the SMC versions won't match and your fans will go revving like a jet... 1.39f5 = 2009 and 1.39f11 = 10/12.. So, yes it will work, but you would have to change out the backplane board..

I wish it were only that simple... but alas.. there is a way!!! Down load the 4,1 to 5,1 firmware and that will allow you to run any w36xx processor or if you have the dual board, any x56xx series.. but you must take care to make sure the heatsinks work. Some dude from Anandtech did just that and one of his processors broke as well as the slot.

Most cost effective: single 2009 to single 2010/2012.
