SOLVED reverting to yosemite

Hi

I upgraded to El Capitan on a new mini mac that came with Yosemite and found that most of my music plugins are not yet compatible, so I need to revert back to Yosemite.

I have my old mini mac and have made a time machine backup on an external drive.

If I start my El Capitan mini mac in restore mode and choose the time machine backup on my external drive will that overwrite my El Capitan installation with Yosemite and all the settings from from old mini mac?

I keep reading that I need to install Yosemite on the new mac mini from a USB drive, but cannot get hold of the Yosemite installer anywhere?

Can I use my time machine yosemite backup to overwrite El Capitan on my new mini mac?

Just attach the Time Machine backup from Yosemite backup drive and option key boot to it. From there use Disk Utility to erase the entire disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Then quit Disk Util and click restore. That will put Yosemite and all your apps and data back on the drive.

I am assuming from your description here the Time Machione backup was made under Yosemite and was not changed after moving to El Capitan.

Another option that I learnt from my own misfortune and a mac mini that you can revert back to the original shipping version of OSX by doing an internet recovery. My 2012 mac mini shipped with Mavericks but when I upgraded to Yosemite it didn't want to play nice. It took a sweet bit of time to recover by this manner but it did get me back up and running.

Well as apple pulls out Yosemite from App Store things are going to be tricky.

Anyway, as I know you may need to use Yosemite USB installer to restore your Yosemite backup. But there may be some sort of backward compatibility, which I am not really sure.

many thanks for this - just to check my understanding:

1. My old mac mini yosemite backup on the external disc has enough data on it to be used as a boot drive to start up my new mini with El Capatino on it?

2. I start my new el capatino mini mac but boot from my external disc time machine back up. How do I so this? cntrl R?

3. I then use this temporary Yosemite instance running from my hard drive to go into disc utility on my new mac and format the hard drive to extended format

4. I quite disk utility and reboot my new mac mini (now without any operating system on it) and I will still get the option to restore Yosemite from my external hard disc?

5. I then restore from my hard disc and my second mac mini will have my original Yosemite on it?

Interesting, I didn't know this was possible? If my Time Machine option doesn't work, how do I access this service?

Let me try and explain better.

Again, verify for me that the old Mini has all your data and apps etc on it, and that is backed up to the Time Machine backup? If that is the case, that backup drive can be used to completely copy what is on the old Mini to the new Mini and in the procees get rid of El Capitan.

To do that turn off the new Mini and attached the Time Machine backup disk from the old Mini. Hold down the option key as you boot and you will see a boot selector screen. In that screen select the Time Machine disk as the boot source. That will boot into a recovery partition on the Time Machine disk.

Then from that recovery screen start Disk Utility and go to the erase tab then select the drive itself at the top of the left column. Now pick Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and apply that change. That will erase the entire disk.

Now quit Disk Utility and click restore. That will move Yosemite along with all your apps and data from the Time Machine backup over to the drive in the new Mini. Once this is done you will be prompted to reboot and you will be done.

After is restarts on Yosemite and you login to your account, go to System Prefs and in the Startup Disk pane set the internal Yosemite drive as the boot volume.

This will put the Yosemite OS from the Time Machine backup back on the drive.

The only issue here will be if you added data to the new Mini since you set it up, as that obviously would not be in the old Mini's Yosemite backup.

Many thanks for taking the time on this. I think I can follow these instructions now, but will need to create a few hours tonite (GMT) to do it. I'll post here how it goes! Just to answer your Q, yes the old mini with Yosemite was backed up using Time Machine to the external hard disc I am using for this process. As far as I know (which isn't very far!) a normal Time Machine back up includes the OS, settings and data from the original drive).

if you're using pro apps it's always best to wait to upgrade to a new os. Anyway if your using logic this is the work around for the AU evaluation.

I have tried this AU validation replacement file work around using the reddit link below and it seems to have worked ok, all my logic music plug ins are now validating under el capitino, so no need to roll back.

thanks to everyone for your help, much appreciated to have all this expertise and support here. Makes my transition to MAC from Windows earlier this year really validated.
