My mac was very slow at switching desktops, 5-10 seconds per switch, and it would often beach ball when trying to interact with the menu bar. I also noticed that the Windowserver process would spike to over 100% CPU utilization whenever a tried to switch desktops.
I was getting ready to nuke my install of High Sierra and do a fresh install when I came across an obscure article about Mission Control settings.
The fix turned out to be going to "settings->mission control" and turning off "displays have separate spaces". The moment I did that it felt like I had a new turbo-computer! Switching desktops was instant , and not more beach balls.
Note that I have a multi-display setup on m iMac.
I'm going try turning it back on again to see if the problem comes back immediately, or if it's an intermittent glitch that is difficult to reproduce.
