Some 3.06 GHz iMac questions

I'm getting a 3.06 GHz iMac soon and had some questions.

What kind of soundcard is in an iMac?
Is it possible to turn the monitor off while the system is still on? Like can I turn it off and then back on at a later time without shutting the iMac down?
I backed up my PC iTunes library to 6 DVD-Rs, can I take these backup discs to an iMac?
Is there a program for the Mac that you can use to make music videos from scenes from DVD movies with mp3s over the scenes? Like can I select scenes from a DVD movie and then put them together and put a song over it? Thanks.

i still dont own an iMac (waiting for the UK back to school thing), but have used macs a bit. the music, if you have copied on to the DVD as either data disc or music disc should work fine.

for the DVD's, well i guess you can use iMovie to make things. if you have the video and music files then just fling them in and it should all work.

you will probably want to consider getting a USB/Firewire hard drive, so you can use time machine and are therefore able to backup data. you can get 1TB HDD for about £120, dont know what that is in americaland money... but get a firewire one if possible as it will transfer so much quicker

1. I don't own a iMac so I'm not sure of the sound card

2. yes you can turn off the monitor by using the brightness controls on the keyboard OR set your display to turn off after a certain amount of time in system preferences.

3. assuming you backed up your iTunes library using the "Back-up to disk" option within iTunes. then just pop in your DVDs and iTunes will do the rest.

4. you can do this, but it will take some time.
1. use Handbrake to rip the whole DVD
2. then open the movie in Quicktime and scrub through the movie to set
in and out points for the clips that you want (you need Quicktime pro
to do this).
3. then import the clips you saved out into iMovie (or Final Cut)
4. begin making you videos within iMovie (or Final Cut)

1. You can use any dvd from itunes on a pc on a mac providing there are no files that are not compatible with a mac e.g. exe
2. you can set a hot corner to turn your moniter off

The sound source is defined in the system profile as "Intel High Definition" Wolfson has been used by Apple recently for sound according to http://forums.macnn.com/58/imac-emac-and-mac-mini/358477/sound-card/

You can set a hot corner to turn off the display or the the key strokes mentioned above (I tested and it works with Leopard).

Music import should be fine if by "backed-up" you mean you copied your music files to DVD.

You can use iMovie to make movies as you described. Final Cut Express ($199) would give you more control and non-destructive editing capabilities.
