Hi everyone,
im after some advice regarding getting started with the iphone.

a friend of mine is a graphic designer who i happened to mention too that i am slowly learning to program for os x. he asked me if i would concentrate on the iphone as hes already paid for the SDK, downloaded it etc, but has no clue how to use it.

so what i wanted to know is if he gives me his copy of the SDK, am i able to install it and use it to develop for him? my iphone is cracked (both software and network provider) running 1.1.4 so i know that i cannot test on that. but i have heard and read things about certificates etc?

can someone please fill me in on what is possible, if i can do it, and what i may need todo or watch out for.

sorry if i am being a bit vague but im not sure what im asking for really :)

thanks
kris

hmm

There are a few things you can do.

First off, anyone can download the SDK for free at developer.apple.com. You can develop apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch and test them on a simulator. The simulator is not a replacement for a real device but can help in testing.

If he registered as a company, he can add you as a member of his team. You can then get a development certificate and provisioning profile to test on a real device with software version 2.0 or higher on it.

If he registered as an individual, there is not much you can do legally. He is the only person authorized to use the certificates and provisioning profiles on his account unless he registered as a company.

However, if he registered as an individual, you can still develop for him on your mac using the free SDK and send him the entire source code. He can then compile it on his computer and submit it to apple. However, this will make things more complicated.

With that said, why in the world would someone pay for an active SDK subscription when they do not know how to use it? Most of the subscription period would be wasted learning how to develop an app. The rest of the subscription period would be wasted developing the app. If you were lucky, you could get one app out the door.

I'm surprised that it's a subscription, if I'm understanding you guys correctly. I thought for the full deal, you just make one $99 payment.
