I'm having the issue where I can text a contact (i.e. put in 'mom' and be able to text her) but she doesn't show up in my contact list as a contact. Any idea why some individuals don't show up in my contacts list?

thanks

yes. doesn't make sense either because in the 'to:' field when I create a new message, all I have to to is type their name and their number pops up and I can send them a text.

anyone else have an idea on this? I can basically type a name in to send a txt message (and it shows their number and name obviously) but if that person calls me it only shows their phone number.

So you are saying that person is actually in your contacts with that phone number--as in you can go to your phone app or contacts app and find that person listed there--but when they call it doesn't bring up the contact information and just shows the phone number (which is already in your contacts)?

sorry, not doing a good job of explaining it here. Basically, all of my contacts are pretty much gone, so when I get a call it just shows the phone number. BUT if I send a text message to someone all I have to do is put their name in the "to:" field and their phone number pops up and I'm able to send and receive text messages from that person's name, not their number. So it's almost like my iphone recognizes the name and number that go together but only with text messages. I'll probably just to the apple store this weekend to see what they say.

Obviously I can just reenter all the contact info one by one myself but I have quite a few contacts and I know they were in my contact list at one point. Not sure if icloud or something screwed with my contact list, but still allowed me to send text messages by simply entering the persons' name.

Wel, messages have a record of those you sent messages to or received messages from. It's different than contacts so it can be pulling from there. So if your contacts disappeared suddenly that's a somewhat different issue. You might want to check with icloud.com to see if they are there and perhaps you can pull them from there. Or perhaps another place you would sync with, like Google.

interesting. So icloud has all of my contacts. I went to itunes and it says this about my contacts. Any idea why icloud would have my contacts but my phone doesn't? i'm not well versed with icloud but do have it set to backup my stuff to icloud automatically

Do you have Contacts enabled in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > iCloud?

yep, I have always had it enabled

Just figured it out. I logged out of my icloud account on my iphone and then logged back in and my contacts got updated. I changed my icloud password a few weeks back and I'm guessing that was the issue. Kinda strange it didn't give me an alert to login again.

Appreciate the help C DM.

Hi,

This is an old issue you 2011 and I'm currently experiencing it. Same as you had. I can text them but can't call them and when they call me I don't see their name. By now I believe you have it figured it out...;)

This is 11/2016 but I just got off the phone with Apple and cleared up this problem.

Go to setting/general/reset/ reset all settings

This will not delete any app, contacts, or photos on your phone it only resets your phone where it will comply with your latest phone update. It will even tell you that when you get to the last button. The only thing that changed on my I6 is the home page photo was removed. Good luck!

That basically resets all settings to default, that's essentially it.

How long does it take to reset and will all my text messages be there after it finishes?

Resetting all settings doesn't remove or affect any data, like messages, on the device. Of course if something goes wrong and you need to completely restore your device to get it working then that would wipe the data too, so it's a good idea to make sure you make a backup.

I am having the same problem. I tried to log out but it won't let me. I press Sign Out, then I am prompted to put in my password to sign out of Find My Friends, then it prompts me to reset my password. I don't want to to do this, so I said cancel.

Thank you!!!! This fixed mine :)

I have had this same issue for months and finally figured it out. If you go to 'groups' on the upper left corner in contacts you can choose what you see and don't see. This fixed it for me.

Bingo! Go to contacts, and in the upper left corner click "groups". Next uncheck your email, iCloud, and Contacts, and click "done". Go back into groups and "check" them all, then click "done". Everything should be in your contacts.

[doublepost=1559566639][/doublepost]I started having problems not seeing the same contacts in my phone as in my text. Turns out when I added an email account to my phone - it changed my contacts. Go to settings- contacts-and make sure your Default Account says ICloud! Mine said exchange and that was the problem! :)

Let's see if it's similar to MY issue.
Normally, when I want to text a small group of guys to get lunch, I start a test and start typing each name. as I type a name options pop up. some are hoe phones, some work phones, some emails, and some mobile phones. It says what each one is right next to it. I pick the mobile and move on to the next guy. all six guys in? good. I type the message and send it. Quick and easy.
Last Friday, I tried the same thing. Atarted typing the virst name and people's home numbers and emails popped up. No mobile numbers. There was at the bottom one number listed but it didn't say what it was - home, work, mobile? nothing. To figure it out, I had to got to my contacts with the number in my head and check what number it was. So do I now have to do that with everyone? and what about the people that I try to text but their mobile numbers (still firtmly in my contacts) don't pop up. I can't even pick their cell phone because it isn't even an option. So of the six guys, only one of them could I text to let him know that imy iphone has gone batty and I can no longer initiate a text.
I went to the ATT store and they were baffled. Said it might be part of an upgrade. They thought it was Apple's attemt to make the phone even "smarter" by only showing mobile phoe numbers but, of course, that is not the case. All of the other useless contact info still ops up. But, apparently, this isn't a problem ... it's a FEATURE!
I miss the days when we could text, don't you? (Need sarcasm font)

THIS!!! this has been making me crazy for months and I finally looked it up.. was hesitant about the settings suggestion as it’s been this way for a decent amount of time. Going to “groups” was a 2 second fix. Thank you!!
