Some Detailed MacBook Pro Questions :)

Hey all, new to the forum. First post.

I have been searching around a bit and the MBP with the Core2Duo chipset is leading in my chioces of new notebook. (Lenovo T60 is in close second )

I do have some rather specific questions, and I hope someone can help me answer them.

1) I have seen a lot similar threads, but has anyone confirmed on the 160GB harddrive upgrade to actually be prependicular recording?

2) The heat issue seems to be address by Apple with the new MBP than the one earlier this year, however, i can not find information on how it faired under full load. Can some one update me with that? (lets say 100% CPU usage for 5~6 hrs, how is the temp then?)

3) There have been some reports about failing drivers while running Windows XP through Bootcamp. Does anyone know about the details? How much of an impact will this be and is there news on Bootcamp fixing them soon? (All my work is gonna have to go through WinXP, not really my choice)

4) Will partition of the harddrive in NTFS and Apple format be in conflict while copying and transfering files from one to another?

Have you tried the live chat Apple offers on their website? I just tried it a few hours ago and a lot of my questions were answered by a live rep. He could not confirm rumors though. Give it a try!

I believe it is, although I cannot verify it.

OS X cannot write to a NTFS partition, although it can read it. I suggest using a FAT32 partition instead, as OS X can read and write that type of file system. Also, have you considered using parallels? It lets you run all your windows programs inside a virtual machine, so you don't need to restart. The only downside is that it cannot do 3D at all.

As far as I know, all 160GB 2.5" HD's are PMR.

I've done some video encoding (probably took 90min), fan noise not a problem. Temp on keyboard/palm rest still cooler than PBG4 1.67 17". Also, I've run RealFlight G3.5 in Windows XP for an hour, causing fans to rev up. No problems with heat, for me anyway.

OS-X can only read from NTFS. XP can't read or write to Mac formatted volumes w/o 3rd party software. But, if you are running Windows through Parallels virtualization s/w, it will allow drag-drop file xfer (currently only in beta), so that's one way around the write restriction to NTFS.

i think reports still vary, some machine are cooler than others... and it's also different in windows than in OS X for the same machine, as windows manage power differently than OS X (not that i think a lot of ppl will be running 100% for 5~6 hrs anyway)

Windows XP has been relatively good with the provided drivers, given you don't do anything fancy like overclock.. i have yet to have any problem with the bootcamp supplied driver for XP... vista is another story

natively NTFS cannot be written by OS X... however i'm sure this can be done with some 3rd party software easily.
and when you are in windows, i'm sure there are software that let you see the files (and perhaps written) on the HFS+ partitions

FAT32 partitions, however, can be read and written in OS X
