iPod Some Existing Moto Phones Work With iTunes 4.9, AI Reports

"The first Motorola cell phone built specifically for iTunes may still be a few weeks away, but in the interim iTunes users have discovered that some of the company's existing handsets are already willing to communicate with the latest version of Apple's jukebox software."

The AI blurb notes that iTunes asked the user to assign a name to the phone and opened a display to allow the user to direct how much memory on the phone should be dedicated to iTunes music. There is an image in the story.

So, I suppose you can go get one of these existing phones and through your own launch party!

It's been looking pretty clear for a while that if not next week, then very soon, iTunes is going to be available on lots of Moto phones, not just a special "iTunes" model. They've already demonstrated iTunes running on existing models, so this shouldn't be a surprise.

And apparently, one doesn't even need to wait until next week / very soon to the extent one has a current Motorola phone with flash memory. I suppose the drawback to utilizing the non-specific model the may be a lack of function specific buttons.

But after all, these are just phones that can play music files, - and Heaven forbit use them as ringtones - so the existing model capability may be a bit of a snoozer for some.

The biggest gap will be in the ability to play (or buy) iTMS tracks.

But after all, these are just phones that can play music files, - and Heaven forbit use them as ringtones - so the existing model capability may be a bit of a snoozer for some.

This is where those iTMS exclusive tracks come in, even general release music that has been bought from iTMS will do it. From what we have been observing in the usual places, there is a definite unwillingness and/or inability among most fans to go through the burn and re-rip routine -- Apple and Sony aren't kidding when they say that DRM is good enough if it merely makes duplication inconvenient rather than impossible. This thing will find a market waiting simply because it is the path of least resistance.
