Ok this is a weird one. I purchased two Michael Jackson music tracks this morning in iTunes (on my PC) and synced my phone afterwards - everything appeared fine. Later in the day I went to listen to some Michael Jackson songs and for some reason the iPod app on the phone was only listing the two I had bought that morning and one other, despite the fact that I have about a dozen other Michael Jackson songs too - and they were playing just fine on my iPhone the other day. I checked in iTunes and they are all still there (on the computer) and play just fine - and when my iPhone is connected I double checked the Music tab and it was set to sync all - but for some reason some of the tracks are refusing to sync. When I look at the Music directory under the iPhone in iTunes it also shows only the three Michael Jackson songs that the iPhone sees. I tried resyncing with no luck - and then I tried unsyncing all my music and then resyncing it all again, and still no change.

I've now tried a restart and a reboot - neither of those worked, so only thing really left that I can think of is a restore. Seems crazy as I only just did one last weekend to try and sort out my flakey GPS! Hope 3.1 sorts this crap out and that it arrives soon! Never had any need to restore my original or 3G iPhone and now had to restore the 3GS twice in as many weeks - plus this is a replacement that I got on launch day as the first one had a stuck pixel!

Anyone else experienced something like this? Got any other ideas I could try?

Have you tried Voice Command? Play songs by Michael Jackson, hee, hee.

Heh I could do, but I'm pretty sure the songs aren't actually on the iPhone - since they don't show up under the iPhone in iTunes either (when listing the Music on the iPhone). Just not sure why the iPhone/iTunes have suddenly decided to stop syncing 17 of his songs just because I added 2 new ones!

try a manual sync

Well just as an update - rather than doing yet another restore I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes and rebuilding the music library (having backed up the old library index files) and that didn't help either - as that time the old Jackson songs showed up but the new ones didn't! This morning I reverted to the original library index and then noticed that just scrolling through my iTunes music (rather than filtering on Michael Jackson) that the new and old songs were listed separately - one lot under M for Michael Jackson and the others under J for Jackson, despite all of them just showing Michael Jackson in the Artist and Album Artist columns. I then looked at the Get Info and spotted there were additional categories for Sort by Artist and Sort by Album Artist and sure enough the two new songs (and the one old song that had been showing up with them on the iPhone) had "Michael Jackson" in the 'Sort by' categories, whereas all the other ones had "Jackson, Michael" - so I changed the new ones to use the same as the old ones, resynced and...

It worked!

Seems iTunes/iPhone get a bit confused when there's an list of an artist's songs where the "Sort by" categories aren't consistent. Bit daft that iTunes can't automatically match the existing pattern for a given artist - looks like I'll have to go through and check if there are any others like that!
