It is best I describe my setup first.
I have a mid 2011 iMac and a late 2008 MBP that both backup to Time Machine.
The Backups are on a HD attached to the iMac. The Hard Drive is partitioned, one for each Time Machine Backup. So the iMac backs up directly, and the MBP backs up over my wireless network, and "through" the iMac.
This setup has run fine for nearly a Year under Lion. After upgrading to ML on both machines, the Time Machine Back ups on the iMac are fast as before, but the MBP backups are very much slower than before. As I had swapped the HD in the MBP for a SSD about a Month ago, I wondered if all these changes had caused some problem with Time Machine, so I reformatted the MBP backup partition & did a brand new backup. This took about 36 Hours for 90GB, and the subsequent backups still seem slow.
Has anyone else had similar problems, and does anyone have a suggestion how to solve this?

I too am experiencing very slow time machine backups since upgrading to Mountain Lion. My setup is a 2007 MBP backing up to a Time Capsule. An incremental backup of a couple of hundred MB takes an hour or more. For the most part, it will just sit there at the same place (currently it's been sitting at 223.5 of 245.8MB for the last half an hour). It's no faster when plugged in via Ethernet and disabling wifi. I tried creating a new backup, but after the full backup completed (which was reasonably fast via ethernet), the incremental backups are as slow as before.

How does that compare with the slowness you're experiencing?

Sorry that I can't offer any advice. Just to let you know you're not alone with this.

I did a reformat of the partition, then a full backup, which took some time. The Incrementals were fast until I switched off my MBP for a Day. then they sometimes run fine, sometimes Hang as you described. Now if they hang, I stop the backup, then when it is done start it again.

I am also getting two colours for backups within Time Machine - Purple or Grey/White - I had that after upgrading to ML ONLY on my MBP and the same is happening now (Before I switched off my MBP after a day of backups all saved backups were the usual purple)
