Some web pages will connect, some don't on my new (to me!) Mac...

Hi there - I got a Dual 450 Powermac G4, 256Mb (shoulda been 512MB, person selling made a slight error, I've another stick of RAM to put in, if that makes a difference here) a few days ago - I have two PC's in the house alongside the Mac - have file sharing working between three machines, and a Linksys BEFSR41 V4 Cable Router for sharing an NTL 10Mb cable connection.

On the PC's, all web pages work, but some simple pages like youtube.com and my own homepage at www.belfast-biker.com won't load (probably other), giving the error messages below... I simply can't work this out. Tried refreshing.

"Safari can't connect to the server"

"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.belfast-biker.com."


I've all three computers set up on static IP - 192.168.1.168, 169 and 170.

Router is obviously 192.168.1.1. and it makes little odds whether I've Dynamic IP set up or not. Port forwarding is setup on a high value (48000+) port for a mac application, and another similar port is setup to the IP of one of the PC.s Both applications using these ports work a treat.

Anyone better than me able to give a hand? I'm truly flummoxed.

Have you by any chance got a program named PeerGuardian running? That blocks the Mac from connecting to a number of IP addresses according to pre-defined lists it downloads off the Internet?

Yup, 194.168.8.100 and 194.168.4.100.

The 2nd address one is in a separate box in windows... but they occupy the same box in the mac with one under the other, and it doesn't allow a comma or anything betwen them is that correct?

No peerguardian running, but used to run it on the PC ages ago, and it neve gave any issue.

Sorry about changing my theory just after replying there I've just installed PeerGuardian on my iMac and it is now blocking your webpage. Apparently the address of your hosting server appears on the Bluetack Spyware and Malware list. Did you wipe the Mac after you got it or is it possible that a PeerGuardian type program that uses the BlueTack lists could be running on it?

It's in this line in the Spyware list

Damn. I HAD installed peerguardian on the mac at the start, but ran it once only, and thought it wasn't running now - but as it turns out, there are two pplogger type programs using it's icon running in the activity monitor.... removed them and trashed the app and am rebooting....


Ah, found a traceroute program in "network utility", very nice!!!

Worked! Tracerouted fine, and works in safari and firefox now....
