Somebody explain the rules on that side window popping up (iPad)

so in iOS 11 you have the new multitasking. But I’m getting very confused by one aspect of it.

sometimes you’re in an app, and you click a safari link. But instead of opening safari in full screen, a little window pops up on the right - like the old slideover windows. But I’d just been using safari in full screen before switching to this app.

Is there some memory of when I maybe used a slideover window with certain apps and the combination is sticking? I like the new dock but most of the multitasking changes are just confusing to me.

Can you provide a screenshot? I’m struggling to imagine what your seeing, and I’ve been on the iOS beta all summer.

What app comes in when you do try slide over? (Swipe from right of screen when in an app)

If I’m in mail and click on a URL, safari slides in from the right - I would want it to open full screen.

Yes, it retains Windows in slideover once they’re put there, seemingly indefinitely. This is a change in behavior from earlier betas in the last beta and doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. As you saw opening something that summons that app normally, brings it up in slideover, even if it exists in both. Only way I know off to completely kill that “connection” is to kill the whole space in multitasking.

Maybe someone else has a better idea.

Another idea is to open a new app in slide over. Now when you open a link in Safari it should open in full screen instead.

Good idea. Putting it in split (if you don't already have another app you want there), then dismissing it also works. All 3 ways are bad workarounds though.
