Im checking out a nikon d-80 tomorrow. Is there a quick easy way to check how many shots it has left. (aka the nikon d-40 shutter is tested for 50,000 clicks (I think) is there a way to check how many clicks that person has taken with it? I would prefer if there was a way to check without hooking it up to a computer but if I must. Thank you.

Well you can check the shutter count and hope it was never reset. I never reset my d70 but suddenly it reset itself. I was pissed. I was at about 9k actuations but I think (someone told me) it may be the battery.

Anyway, you can check that and hopefully take their word for it. Also my understanding is you can check something like this using an application called IExif by Opanda.

Your D70 reset itself because it reached the end of the count. It starts over at 9999 shots, resetting back to 1.

The app you mention is the one. Get it and find out how many shots have been taken.

The number of shutter releases is stored in the EXIF data of the pictures you've taken. Search for Actuations. Make sure not to have touched the file, usually a lot of EXIF info is lost once you edit/export the image (at least this is what happens when I export pictures with Aperture).

For Mac users (which most of us on this forum are, I assume) - you can just install exiftool using fink. Exiftool will show you every field attached to the image, including "shutter count".

It's too bad the D70 resets at 10K - I'm assuming I'm at 12700 actuations, but I'm not 100% sure (I don't think I could be at at 22700 yet...).

For people who prefer GUI apps, there is a free app called EXIF Viewer who does just that and nothing else. Did I mention it's free? ;) :)

Are you sure the D70's counter resets? It didn't on mine (these are just partial EXIF data):

There are always local laws that may affect this sort of thing - but generally speaking warranties are not transferable (with the specific exception of items purchased as a gift). A vendor can certainly have a more liberal policy than this; but that does appear to be Nikon's position.

Hmm... the Mac version, at least, appears to only show you a few of the EXIF fields - and shutter count is not one of them
Are you sure you haven't exported the file (that includes dragging and dropping from Aperture)? If I do that, a lot of the EXIF data gets lost in the process.

BTW, the app cannot read NEF files.

Yeah, I used the exact same file I ran exiftool on (a few posts up). It was dragged straight off the camera.

If you are seeing shutter actuations when you run it... perhaps it just doesn't grok the D70's EXIF data (although I ran it on a JPEG for maximum compatibility)?

No, that should work. The (partial) EXIF data are also from a D70. Are you sure you've downloaded this app? (There is a Windows app called EXIF Viewer, too, but it has nothing to do with this one.)

Interesting... I was just going by what's posted earlier in this thread.

When I added up all my trashed images (I tend to throw away anything I know I'll never use) plus what's been in my iPhoto + Aperture libraries, I was over 2700 - so I just assumed the earlier "resets at 9999" was correct (although my personal guesstimate on my camera's shutter was more of the order of 5-6K, to be honest).

I wonder if flashing the firmware could have reset it? I'm a little leery of trying it again just to find out though - too many things can go wrong. :D

BTW I guess my other post about "not understanding the D70" doesn't make sense, given that you have a D70 as well... :p

Truth be told, I had. I sold it after I had seen the D80's viewfinder: instant love. But I knew the D70 had more than 10k actuations, so I checked its EXIF data (my D80 should have about 6k now).

Ha! I had entered "exif viewer" in VersionTracker. The folks that created the Windows app had apparently ported it to OS X several years ago (old PPC binary). That's the one that shows limited info.

The app you've linked to is universal/fat, and it shows everything - thanks! Too bad it doesn't support RAW; although taking a JPEG for this purpose isn't particularly onerous.

Usually just the name of the file will tell you what number that picture is. At least it's that way on my camera, I'd assume it's the same on other ones too. I have something like p9877.jpg as my file name signifying that it was the 9877th shutter cycle.

When you format on a Nikon it resets the shot sequence back to 1.
