I woke up at 10 ish AM this morning with this:

I have Jay Freeman's VNC server installed on my phone and have had it for quite a while. I'm very unsure of if it was accessed through EGDGE/3G or through my router. My router is WEP encrypted with a local address of 192.168.1.1xx

Anyone think they could think of how someone even possibly attempted connecting through port 5900 on purpose to my phone from that IP ? How did they find MY phone's IP ?

I just thought that was just a little bit creepy !

I just don't understand how they could have connected through Wifi because my phone was asleep ALL night, when the phone goes to sleep, it disconnects from the router, it shows connected in the screenshot because I woke the phone up and it reconnected to my router.

Whoa thats weird, and sort of scary.

whois says:

OrgName: Latin American and Caribbean IP address Regional Registry
OrgID: LACNIC
Address: Rambla Republica de Mexico 6125
City: Montevideo

Interesting....

It doesn't disconnect anything if it's plugged in and charging.

Have you ever tried to connect to your device when it's on 3G/EDGE? Are you sure that doesn't work with VNC?

Good frackin' thing that pop-up was there....

That's crazy. Could just be random though. Someone can build a crawler that sniffs for open VNC ports.

I wouldn't worry as long as you have that pop-up. If you get multiple attempts drop it.

When phone is asleep no wifi works, but Edge/3G will. (I dunno if that's part of what you were confused about, just stating facts)

Jay Freeman is a developer, aka saurik he is the guy who made Cydia, and the VNC app the guy is using...not the one trying to connect.

Oh well.

I've had this happen to me numerous times. I know no one was attempting to connect to my iPhone, because I live in the country and no one is around me.

I once pressed Accept, and absolutely nothing happened. I expected Notes to open and some creepy message to be typed out by a stalker or something, but nothing. So just press Decline and move on.

Re: First paragraph

Your joking right?

If Power is on, then WiFi is on

that my young Padawan is incorrect and I can post the XCode Organizer screenshot if need be. The fact is that your device detects and knows that it is plugged into power and does NOT disable WiFi.

Further evidence; how then could I continue to access both my iPhone and iPod using ssh (WiFi) when they are asleep, but plugged in to power?

Regardless, the OP said he was using a router and unless he had port forwarding turned on for HIS iPhone's IP, the attack came in over the EDGE/3G network.

The question was also asked, "how"; it's not difficult once you know the IP range for a given provider / area to scan for open ports.

Edit: I for one would not be so cavalier about the incident (not the OP, others)

Sorry sir, you didn't read closely enough. I said when asleep. The phone doesn't sleep when plugged in. I know the Wifi works because I stream music and use appletalk and ssh when plugged in. So the key word was asleep. I should have bolded it. Sorry for the mixup.

so in this case was your VNC acting as a firewall for incoming/outgoing connections and we should all get veency vnc to prevent or at least notify us of these sorts of occurrences or will they not be able to obtain access anyway but we wouldn't be notified of the attack if we don't get something like veency vnc?

Re: First paragraph

Um, no. I'm not. I would think that someone that tried to connect to my phone would probably want to do something to it. But, nothing happens when you press Accept. Probably just a bug in Veency.

Or maybe I'm just not paranoid like everyone else.

Wow I didn't know VNC was available! that's awesome, but a little unsettling seeing as you have had someone trying to access your iphone.

Lots of people scan ports so this could of been anyone.

Hopefully this won't become a constant for you.

I'm talking about how you think living in the country assured you that no one was trying to connect.

Like I said before, I'm pretty sure that no one was attempting to connect to my phone. If they were, I would assume they would have an intent to do so, thus probably taking some action when I accepted. But I accepted, and nothing happened. I'm not paranoid, and I mostly don't care if someone attempts to connect to my phone, which I doubt.

If you all would like to continue your rant of paranoia, then do not let me stand in your way. I, however, have better things to worry about.

Like iPhone Linux. :)

You totally missed what I was getting at.
