Anyone notice that the MBP's still haven't been upgraded to Double Layer Superdrive, but the MacBook does have one....

Really weird, you would think that the pro model would have that first.

umm the MB does not have a DL superdrive....only the 17" MBP does.

The MB doesn't burn them though, only reads. I am sure they will add DL capability to the MBP as soon as its available.

Dual capacity.

Instead of recording 4.7 gb on one layer, they record almost 4.7 gb on two layers, making the capacity of the disc almost 9 gb. Its quite an advantage.

Probably didn't have a supply when the original MBP was announced, though you should have expected in during a speed bump if they had them.

the reason is that the optical drives in the all the intel laptops aside from the 17 are slimmer in size and are not available with DL. They use slimmer drives in the 15 because it overlaps with the trackpad where it does not do so in the 17.

It's possible because the drive reads DL, they could release a firmware enabling burning onto them.

But then Apple rarely release firmwares for superdrives....

Why should we have expected it with a speed bump? Geez this has been discussed too much. The trackpad covers the left side of the MBP 15" up so they have to use thinner drives and there are no superdrives in this thickness as of yet. As for the MBP 17" because it's bigger the trackpad doesn't cover it up so it can use the old superdrives.

It's not possible. If it's not a Dual layer burner, it's not going to burn Dual layers, no firmware update can fix that. We'll see dual layer burners in the MBP and MB when there's either a case redesign or someone comes out with a 8.5 mm DL burner.

Well, many drive makers make all their DVD drives with dual layer burning capabilities (it's cheaper then running a separate production line or something or other) and a firmware patch unlocks the ability. This is not the case here, though.

By the time Dual Layer media are affordable, you will most likely want and have a new laptop anyway.

Also, who needs to burn 9GB of data from a machine that only has a 60GB - 80GB hdd? Maybe some people do, but not me.

There's always the UJ-842 drive that writes dl and is 9.5mm. So I imagine it's just quantity available and/or pricing that's holding them back from the MB and 15" MBP
