4.0 is out within a few months (based on 1yr per major software revision), and could DRASTICALLY change the unused homescreen space, multitasking, etc.

Now one might ask, "well then WHY wouldn't they show this off during the iPad announcement?"

For one very big reason: iPhone > iPad to Apple. The iPhone has no other competition against other Apple products. The iPad does: the Macbook line. The iPhone will probably continue to sell incredibly well, regardless of the iPad announcement. The iPad, however, may pull many Macbook owners away towards the cheaper machine.

I think it is FAR too soon to be slamming the iPad. Not before a major software release; not before we see how amazing some apps become; not before we see if the iPad swallows the netbook/kindle markets.

But according to many reliable sources on the internet (blogs and forums mainly) this iPad will suck and fail and is the worst that Apple could have ever done. How can a software update even change that?

We'll see. Right now, all the "haters" (yeah right, they HATE) have to let their anger out, and all the "fanboys" have to drink the kool-aid.

I'm glad I was not on this planet when the iPhone arrived, to see so many "stupid" threads in Forum Spy is quite a challenge to my clicking abilities.


Btw, I think the iPad is a good device, which has the opportunity and possibility to change the way we interact with computers.
It's just another testing device, like the iPhone. The only downside I still think it represents (in my eyes) is the focus on consuming. But that may change with future app releases.

4.0 will not have multitasking. If Apple was going to intro multitasking, it would have done so by now.

Multitasking may come with a new hardware iPhone release, but I don't think so. Apple will prob move towards the new Apple A4 chip line in the iPhone. If something as big as iPad with a larger battery and a superpowerful A4 chip can' multitask, a smaller iPhone 4 won't.

Face it-- Steve Jobs has decided no multitasking and no flash. He is a stubborn guy. And lack of those features hasn't stopped Apple from selling these devices to date.

If the iPad/iPod touch could make calls then I could see them as real competition to the iPhone. But the iPad is too big to be carrying like a phone and the iPhone has more features (ie. phone calls, more apps working properly with the internet connection) than the iPod touch. If anything, the iPod touch is the product that is having trouble with the iPhone than the other way around. From how I see it, if people want a phone and start considering the iPhone, the iPod touch isn't very likely to change someone's mind about it. On the other hand, if someone wanted an iPod touch, an iPhone might be more appealing because of all the additional tasks it can perform.

1) I honestly think it would have been more than most people could handle - this has already blown most peoples minds - imagine an iPhone 4.0 OS as well!!

2) It means all the PR shill-astro-turfing 'reverse momentum, create inertia' attacks can only be based upon stuff that is publicly know about.

3) Apple will likely announce iPhone OS 4.0 the day before iPad ships and as part of a combined iPhone 4.0 announcement.

Most people live in the real world and are totally indifferent to Apple product announcements.

If you mean the ones who frequent these forums then the majority would have coped just fine with a preview of 4.0. There's only a small minority who would be overwhelmed with excitement or contempt for yet another big announcement.

Unfortunately, this small minority makes almost all of the noise around these parts.
