4.0 is out within a few months (based on 1yr per major software revision), and could DRASTICALLY change the unused homescreen space, multitasking, etc.
Now one might ask, "well then WHY wouldn't they show this off during the iPad announcement?"
For one very big reason: iPhone > iPad to Apple. The iPhone has no other competition against other Apple products. The iPad does: the Macbook line. The iPhone will probably continue to sell incredibly well, regardless of the iPad announcement. The iPad, however, may pull many Macbook owners away towards the cheaper machine.
I think it is FAR too soon to be slamming the iPad. Not before a major software release; not before we see how amazing some apps become; not before we see if the iPad swallows the netbook/kindle markets.
