If you're looking to get a previous pro version iPhone next month once the new phones come out, there is an important point to consider in your price estimates. If Apple raises prices $100+ as we're expecting, the second-hand value of previous phones (12 pros and 13 pros) wont drop as much as it would have if there was no price increase. That is especially the case given that for a vast majority of the population, the practical differences between the 12PM, 13PM and 14PM are minimal/inconsequential.

The reason the prices of older models won't drop as much is a function of the fact that those who are price sensitive to the increase in the new models, but still need to upgrade, will look at last years model and the year before. Inevitably, that will increase the number of potential buyers for those phones, and sellers know this as well. Also, because of the price increase, people who normally upgrade all the time might skip this year, ultimately resulting in less phones on the secondary market. Less supply and more demand.

This year I'm giving my 13PM to my wife and not selling so it doesn't affect me, but just a thought for those who are selling their phone to upgrade or waiting for the new phone to buy an older model.

Agreed. Bought a second hand 13 Pro last month at a decent price. Not expecting prices to fall that much given, as you say, the anticipated increases in the 14 Pro.

Depends where you're buying from. In the Apple Refurb Store, iPhone prices get dropped -$100 each year and are based on the original sales price.

The thing is, people who are buying the Pro models are ready to spend a bit of extra money, AKA many will NOT be interested in buying the 12 Pro if they can go for the 13 Pro or 14 Pro instead for not much more, or buy the standard model which can compete with it, say the standard 14 or its max version instead of the 12 Pro.

Realistically, the main incentive to buy those older Pros is the value, they will not sell unless that's there. The standard models also devalue the Pros as they begin to catch up, which shouldn't be getting such a price increase.

You are right they won't drop as much at first, but they will lose momentum if they stay expensive until there's not much choice but to lower it.

(And if we want to get a bit superficial, the 12s and 13s will look "old" next to the 14 Pro with its hole punch and pill design. Another turn-off for potential Pro owners who want the newest look, especially considering it will likely trickle down to the standard models next year.)
