So, seems Netflix is next in blocking it's app on rooted devices, (bootloader unlock or safety net check or whatever).

Every since marshmallow, Android has taken steps towards becoming locked down, root has been harder to achieve, apps frequently check for unlocked bootloaders and refuse to install or quit working after the app updates.

Obviously, this is because Android has been seen as not as secure as say iOS and with privacy and devices being use for mobile banking and other aspects of people's life.

It does seem as if root is going away and this kind of irks me. I was ok without using custom ROMs but loosing root, at least on some of my devices, would suck. I would love to root and debloat my s7 edge but there is too much going into it. Kind of like maintaining custom ROMs back in the day.

Yeah, there is always a pixel or pixel 2 but how much longer before root becomes a thing of the past?

What's next? Is play movies or music going to stop working if you are rooted? Your camera app?

I'm sure if Android does lock down like iOS, it will not be all bad, but I cringe at rampant bloatware and ads and who knows what else.

Android will never be as locked down as ios, root and jailbreak will always be achieveable. I feel it's "harder" due to toxic communities and being paid more to sell exploits.

Blame piracy and the networks. And the fact that streaming services are providing a lot of original content nowadays. Also, this probably started when Netflix allowed offline viewing.

Rooting and unlocking the bootloader makes your device more vulnerable. I'm pretty sure that's why Android Pay and Samsung Pay won't work on rooted devices. Netflix is only covering their bottoms.

With that said, I love rooting my non-essential Android devices.

Rooting with magisk should fool safety net and allow Netflix to work, but it is cat and mouse. I have an old gs4 on 7.1.2 I fool around with and it passes the safety net check. After some indeterminate amount of time it fails though, not sure if it is my device specifically or what
