Take this for what it's worth.
While I find it hard to believe that Apple would update the MacBook Pro at the August 7th event, having recently updated the line on June 5th, something peculiar is up with the MacBook Pro.
I am the system administrator for my school and I have been ordering the computers for my district. I placed two separate orders for MacBook Pros. One was a single MacBook Pro on July 5th and the other order was for 2 MacBook Pros on July 17th. All three MBPs were stock configurations. I have received delay emails on both orders. The July 5th order has been delayed three times. Each time I call for the reason the order has been delayed, Apple tells me it's the MacBook Pro.
Last summer, I ordered three iMacs in late July for the new video production elective, and I didn't get them until the 2nd week of September. As you'll recall, they updated iMacs right after Labor Day (and ironically they haven't updated them since!).
Same thing last summer with the Xserve. I ordered the 2nd week of July and delay, delay, delay. Then in August, Apple announced the new Xserve with Intel at WWDC. I was waiting weeks to finally get word that they wouldn't be available until October! Ouch!
When I called my Apple rep last summer after WWDC, she told me that they often delay with schools because they have a special relationship with schools and don't want to piss them off by shipping a product that Apple knows is going to be replaced with a new product in the near future. She told me I could go ahead and get the G5 Xserve or wait for the Intel Xserve. (By then, it was too late for me to do anything, so I opted to wait until October when it was less busy.)
While I lean toward the position that the MBP delay might be related to the new power adapter or the sheer demand for this product, past experience is saying otherwise. I would love to hear from anyone that does purchasing for their school district to see if orders you made for your MacBook Pro have shipped.
