Take this for what it's worth.

While I find it hard to believe that Apple would update the MacBook Pro at the August 7th event, having recently updated the line on June 5th, something peculiar is up with the MacBook Pro.

I am the system administrator for my school and I have been ordering the computers for my district. I placed two separate orders for MacBook Pros. One was a single MacBook Pro on July 5th and the other order was for 2 MacBook Pros on July 17th. All three MBPs were stock configurations. I have received delay emails on both orders. The July 5th order has been delayed three times. Each time I call for the reason the order has been delayed, Apple tells me it's the MacBook Pro.

Last summer, I ordered three iMacs in late July for the new video production elective, and I didn't get them until the 2nd week of September. As you'll recall, they updated iMacs right after Labor Day (and ironically they haven't updated them since!).

Same thing last summer with the Xserve. I ordered the 2nd week of July and delay, delay, delay. Then in August, Apple announced the new Xserve with Intel at WWDC. I was waiting weeks to finally get word that they wouldn't be available until October! Ouch!

When I called my Apple rep last summer after WWDC, she told me that they often delay with schools because they have a special relationship with schools and don't want to piss them off by shipping a product that Apple knows is going to be replaced with a new product in the near future. She told me I could go ahead and get the G5 Xserve or wait for the Intel Xserve. (By then, it was too late for me to do anything, so I opted to wait until October when it was less busy.)

While I lean toward the position that the MBP delay might be related to the new power adapter or the sheer demand for this product, past experience is saying otherwise. I would love to hear from anyone that does purchasing for their school district to see if orders you made for your MacBook Pro have shipped.

It's possible it's waiting on the iLife/iWork update which might happen next Tuesday. Which if true will make me disappointed I purchased my Macbook pro when I did (It is expected to arrive on Monday or Tuesday) and epically considering I paid the extra $50 for iWork. But it wont be that bad I have a friend who works at an apple repir store who offered to install it for me for free if they update it, not sure how legal it is but I will have a clean conscience hell I already paid for it.

I ordered my Macbook Pro on the 27th and coincidentally it ships Aug 6th - 9th. I'm guessing an iLife update. Or at least I'm hoping. It seems like I've waited forever. It could be that they were working out some of the reported problems on here, yellow screen, kernel panics etc.. I hope it's a combination of both.

that makes sense but, the apple stores have had a hard time getting stock the past few weeks as well..so you never know

There is no MacBook Pro update in the near future. Otherwise there would be testing notes in Radar for pre-production testing. If you don't want to believe me, just wait for Tuesday.

Just curious: were your MBP orders for 15" or 17" models (or both)? I've heard from a very reliable source ;) that the 17" models are (very) soon supposed to be updated with LED displays.

Just wondering, if you ordered 17" models, whether that could be the reason for your delays... Or, if the iLife rumor is true, one of the reasons...

I ordered a MPB 17' on Saturday and it had a ship date of 2-4 days. Interestingly my ship date is August 8-10. This is 2 days late for the 2 day mark of the 2-4 day estimate. I wonder if it is pushed back due an update, probably iLife.

I think you guys are reading in to it a little too much?
I ordered mine on the 23rd and the ship date was Aug 1 - Aug 6. You ordered 4 days later and your earliest ship date is 5 days later. Seems quite close.

Are people forgetting that Apple just updated the MBPs in June. It's gonna be a while before we get new ones again.

I think stock levels are just low at the moment - I had a yellow hue on my MBP and I got a replacement which took 3 weeks to come in.

That was back in July - not sure what the demand is like now, but I reckon they are still high.

I'm going to pretend that they're updating it tomorrow with a new case with a user replaceable drive :D

I just have to hold out for...tomorrow! ;)

Guys, stock levels are low on the MacBook Pros because supply is low on the LED screens. Production and supply (from the companies that manufacture the screens) still hasn't caught up with demand. You can't say that there are new MBPs on the way simply because of shipping delays, or you would also have to ask yourself where the Rev. 2 iPhone is? There were certainly shipping delays around its release, but that doesn't mean a new product is coming. Sometimes low stock of a product can be a good indicator, but that doesn't mean you have to vacate your common sense either.

But there's no delay on the iPhone, so...

NEW MACBOOKS TOMORROW! :D

Jeez...I'm FINALLY receiving my new MBP Intel 2.2 this week..and if they are just going to update a bunch of stuff ... well, that'd kinda suck to miss out by a few days of ordering.

Maybe they will update the Pro's keyboard inline with the MacBook keyboard and the new iMac keyboard. This would make me very happy, the keyboard on the MacBook Pro is one of the reasons I can't decide between a MB or MBP... its awful!

Ugh, I give up; this is hopeless. The only way you people will be convinced is when you see the product announcements tomorrow, and even then I bet they'll be a few people holding out by saying "Well maybe its coming later today."

P.S. There was a short delay on the iPhones right after release when all the supply in stores was being bought up. Of course there's no supply shortage still.

I'm just joking about updates tommorow. I'd like them though. I haven't gotten one solely because of the hard drive issue.
