So, I was unable to download and install the supplemental update (10.15.5) from system preferences. I then manually downloaded both the supplemental update and combo update from apple, however that didn't work either. I kept getting errors "The installation failed. An error occurred installing the update" and "request timed out".

Restarting and updating in Safe Mode still provided the same errors.

The disk space was not an issue, I had 390 GB free.

I even called apple... They had me reinstall (without erasing) OS and that didn't work either!

After googling my problem for hours, I managed to update to 10.15.5 after creating a new user account (admin). I deleted the new user account after updating.

But now I’m really worried! Will I have to do that every time an update comes out?

Or Should I erase the disk and reinstall the OS?

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I'd really appreciate any help and input please!

Thanks!

It could be as simple as something is corrupted in your user account. I asked you to create the new admin account as a sanity check against the user account that you are currently using. Is your current user account a standard user or an admin user?

The current account (the account that I was using originally to try to update but failing) is an admin account.

I created a new admin account and was able to successfully download and install the update (from system preferences).

Then I deleted the new user account that I created in order to install the update.

Can you try again to install the 10.15.5 update from your current user admin account. Let's see if the issue still happens again.

There is no update available anymore. There was a notification for an update before, but now since I updated in the other admin account. It says Your mac is up to date.

I'm concerned about future updates and wondering if I should erase and reinstall the OS?

Thanks!

I meant install the 10.15.5 update that you manually downloaded from the Apple Support Downloads. By the way, there was no need to create another thread when this is basically the same issue.

Is that possible? I've already updated?
Yes. It won't hurt anything, it will just overwrite the same system files that it did last time. You could do it 50 times if you wanted to. People sometimes will install the combo update on top of the update done through System Preferences because they were having an issue and the combo update correct the problem.

This is what happened in less than a minute. Should I click on restart?

Thank you

Yes, want to see if the update will download and install.

This won’t tell you the reason why the install timed out the first 2 times you tried. It could have been due to Apple server issue or it could have been your ISP that was having an issue at the exact time you tried the install. It is really hard to know, especially after the fact. I would not sweat it too much, things happen and your system is probably working fine. Just keep an eye on it and make sure you do regular periodic backups of your system.

It downloaded and installed successfully from my current admin account! Thank you!
