OMG -- Sun brought back their laptops!!!!

WHERE'S MY VISA CARD???

EDIT: Urgh.. they start at like 3500$US.. nevermind.

Sun charges 1500$ for 4 gigs of ram, 2000$ for a 24" monitor, well, you get it.... And I thought APPLE overpriced their ram alot; a new level of overpricing!

Plus, their highest end desktop's graphics card is WORSE than my powerbook's...

Oops... sorry. I forgot to include the specs....

Sun Ultra 45 with dual 1600 MHz sparc processors
2 140 GB HD
4 GB RAM
20" flat screen monitor
Running Solaris 10 Update 1
The station weighs in at almost 75 lbs!

It truly is a thing of beauty! I was hugging the box before I even unpacked it.... :)

I do Tech Support for a software company. The software runs on various flavors of Unix and Windows--hence the need for the Unix OS. I love it!!

I don't have anything but the basic software installed on it yet, but here's a pic of it booted up...

Sweet. :D

Yup! Isn't it beautiful???

I've been terminalling and su-ing and command-lining, and Mozilla-ing to my heart's content all afternoon! I'm seriously in heaven! :D

Forgive me for my ignorance but what is it?? I have never come across one before or even heard of it.

It's a Unix machine. Unix BSD is what the Mac OS is based off of IIRC so there are some similarities--especially when you use terminal and stuff.

They're mainly used in business (at least if it's higher-end software-related), laboratories, computing departments at universities, etc since they tend to be too expensive for home use. Essentially, they're powerful machines with powerful operating systems.

This little baby makes up somewhat for my not personally owning a Mac. :) iTwitch, as far as this sugar daddy goes, I'll have to give it back if I ever leave the company. *sniff, sniff* Definitely gives me incentive to wanna stick around. :D

If I wasn't trying to memorize how many days I have to file an answer if served with process via the State Department of Assessments and Taxation and I file a preliminary motion to dismiss (60 days or 15 after the court determination - whichever is later), I would be doing the same thing...

Thanks for the description, I didn't know what it was either hehe. Pretty nice! Can you play games on it?

I read that sentance maybe 4 times before I could even start to understand what you typed.

Anyway, nice machine! Its not a dell! yay!

Edit: 500th post! I love this thread even more now!

 Pure sex. How do you like Solaris 10? I was going to give it a shot.

Well, I've only been on it for a day, but so far no complaints. It seems pretty similar to Solaris 9, but maybe I'll change that statement as I use it more....

Um, never tried, and I don't think there are a lot of companies that build games for Unix--unless you're playing role playing games. Maybe I'm wrong on that? It would make a nice game server, though.....

I used to play doom on my solaris computers. I must say I do like it and part of me want one, but it would just go to waste. For the cost of that machine, I can build a Apple Mac OS X server on some better hardware for less.
