Song order not syncing on iPhone

There seems to be a problem with Smart Playlists and the iPhone. The song order in Smart Playlists is not syncing properly to the iPhone -- although it does on my iPod. This is a real pain when I have a lot of songs and need alphabetical order to quickly find something.

I've searched the web for solutions; I've tried the "Copy to Play Order" to no avail. Any explanations or solutions???

(iTunes 9, iPhone 3G.)
