There is either lack of information out there or just confusing. I have a mac pro 3,1 that I'm looking to do a major upgrade on. Due to the 3g limitations of the sata bus I want to run my whole system and necessary work drives off 6g ssd drives and I had the understanding that tempo ssd pro plus pcie card with 2 drive slots would address my needs. I need 3 drives. 1 boot, 1 scratch, 1 sample libraries. I am a music producer, so speed is essential and the scratch (audio files) and sample libraries must be separated.
The issue here is that the 6g bandwidth promised by sonnet applies to either one card (on the tempo ssd card which only has one card slot) or when the two cards on the pro plus card are set up in raid 0. Since I only have 2 pcie slots left (two other are being used by audio interface and video card) I can only have 2 hard drives it seems that will get full 6g bandwidth. My initial goal was to have one tempo ssd card with the boot drive on it, and the other card would be a pro plus with two drives, functioning as two drives, not set up in raid 0.
Any input into this?
I called sonnet, they basically told me all their testing for two drives on one card is done with raid 0 and short of telling me I will experience speed loss because two cards will be filling up the pcie bus bandwidth, they could not tell me exactly how much and told me to test it myself. so they were not much help.
i'm hoping someone experiences could chime in here or help me out. The guy at sonnet honestly didn't seem to know what he was talking about, and I can't find any info online either after searching for a while. All users use the pro plus card in raid 0.
ps - please don't tell me to upgrade to a newer mac pro model, that is not an option. I have to stick with that I have now and make it work and optimize it as much as I could. If the tempo ssd pro plus card with 2 separate drives will essentially be splitting 6g bandwidth, I will get 2 3g drives, I am better off just sticking 2 3g drives in the internal sata bay anyway. I can then just use the system boot drive on the pcie to get real fast system performance, but the sample library and audio scratch drive would benefit from having 6g speed as well.
