So the display on my 13" M1 Air got damaged. It's fine otherwise so I've got it hooked to my TV for games etc. I bought an M2 Air (15", 16/512). My Internet connection is cable and download on both is comparable (350-400M, on Xfinity). But the upload on the M1 is about 100m, the 15" is about 15m. I'm using Speedtest and selecting the same server both times.

Private relay is off on both.
Wifi settings are identical on both.
They're in the same room about 6 feet apart.
Shutdown and restart did nothing.

The only difference I can see is that the M1 is on 14.1 and the M2 is on 14.2.1 - are slow upload speeds a known 14.2 issue? I could clean install 14.1 perhaps but that's a lot of hassle unless it's a sure fix.

Need to know more about your Wi-Fi router and wireless hardware setup before suggesting anything other than to restart the M2 Air.

.... one, it's the same router for both (the Xfinity box) and two, of *course* I've shut down and restarted. That's why I mentioned that in the OP.

I don't need help troubleshooting, thanks though. I've walked through everything (and I mean everything). Just wanted to know if there was a known issue with wifi on Sonoma 14.2.x

I more meant 'known to the community'. Some of you assume that no one ever does the obvious thing like reading the notes. I do.

The two threads mentioned above are the community. They are opened and pinned so that users can quickly find known issues and share what else might be considered a bug or what is not working on their systems.

I’ve tested Wi-Fi (5GHz, WPA3) on Sonoma 14.2.1 (23C71) MBA M1 and it seems to be working

How did you get on with this issue?

I'm in a very similar situation - I upgraded my 2019 Intel MacBook Air just before Christmas to a 15" M2 MacBook Air (8/512). I then updated the M2 to Sonoma 14.2.1 and a few days later happened to notice my wifi upload speed was a fraction of what it should be. I'm on a fibre connection and should get up to 900mbps download and 900mbps upload, however, when I tested on Speedtest.net while my download speed was fine, I was struggling to get even 1mbps upload. At first I suspected Sonoma 14.2.1, however, I tried my old 2019 MBA which is still running Sonoma 14.2, and that also suffered from the same issue. I also have an M1 Mini running 14.2.1 and that was also suffering from slow upload speed, as well as my iPhone 15 Pro!

After several days of troubleshooting, I have finally been able to fix/reproduce the issue on demand. I have found the following:
  • On my iPhone if I connect the audio output to an AirPlay speaker, it cures my slow wifi upload issue completely
  • On my M2 MBA, the same thing happens with a caveat - I connect to an AirPlay speaker, and run the Speedtest in Chrome and everything is great uploading at 700mbps. Then I go to Speedtest in Safari and it's still uploading at only 1mbps, so not 100% fixed I suppose
Do you have an AirPlay speaker? Can you try connecting to it to see if it solves the issue for you too? It's as if the wifi goes slightly dormant until connecting to an AirPlay speaker kind of "wakes it up" to full speed.

Would be great to hear how you get on.
