Sonoma install missing desktop

I installed Sonoma update on a 27” iMac Pro 2017. After install all my desktop files were gone. I can find them on my hard d drive but some files are empty and I can not open them nor drag them to my desktop. The same is true on iCloud.com. I can see the files but cannot drag them on to my desktop. I have been in touch with Apple for 10 days and counting with no results or resolutions. Anyone experience this or better still if you have did you find a fix. Thanks

Settings > Desktop and Screensaver > Show Items … enable On the desktop
