macOS 14.3 (Sonoma) issues/bugs:

1) shutdown panic with Thunderbolt SSD connected (must disconnect) https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-restart.2397392/?post=32606982#post-32606982
2) no more shutdown button on logon screen; after panic must logon to shutdown
3) 2-second delay when opening folder on external disk (no delay with Montery)
4) restore to old OS (12.7 Montery) is not possible; Time-Machine recovery will only restore data
5) some applications required updates (API changes?): Xcode, Little Snitch, ABFR
6) Screen shots (apple-shift-4) open in Preview twice as large (on 4K display, 144 DPI)
7) Java issues: applications hang and require re-launch, RCP application splash inverted (https://github.com/eclipse-platform/eclipse.platform.swt/issues/751)

When I tried to downgrade the OS from my TimeMachine backup I discover issuse #4.

Issue 4 is not new. Been like that since Big Sur. Time Machine only backs up the Data volume not the SSV.

This is why the Apple instructions for a full restore from Time machine tell you to reinstall the SSV then use Migration Assistant from Time Machine. If you want to roll back to an earlier OS you will need to install it from a bootable USB installer.

Issue 1 is not a widespread problem. I have a three TB SSDs which are not causing KPs in Sonoma.

The SSD is working normally - the issue is with system shutdown. Shutdown causes a KP, which then reboots. Then logon (no more shutdown on logon screen), then shutdown - and another KP. This continues until I unplug the SSD.

My SSD is connected using a Thunderbolt enclosure, which requires a KEXT (system extension). There is a race condition unloading KEXT and unmounting volumes in macOS; which results in a hung system --> kernel panic. It used to hang sometimes (1 in 3 shutdown), but with Sonoma it is every single shutdown.

No fix for 2 years now (Montery) ... to fiddle (unplug/re-plug) the USB-C cable every day before shutdown is not a premier experience for a MacStudio. I cannot replace the enclosure, because I need the both the SSD (4TB/2000MB per sec) and RAID disks for FCPx. This is a pure macOS issue; was working perfectly with the Trashcan MacPro.

Not sure I understand this. My Thunderbolt drives are also NVMe in enclosures (Envoy Express and Orico), and I have not needed to install kexts.

8) My USB-ATAPI adapter (used to connect the TimeMachine HDD) does not work with Revovery because it has no driver. Good news, my LaCie eSATA (Thunderbolt-1) adapter works (using TB-1 to USB-C dongle).
9) When I airplay from QuickTime player to my AppleTV, enter the code (from AppleTV display) and then my Mac crashes (panic) and restarts. I have 14.3 (current as of today). Tried 4 different mp4 files, and drag-drop into Safari Airplay crashes as well. Submitted the crash reports (as always), have submitted 100's already ... Apple does not care.

All the options are in the top right screen, under the Shutdown icon.

This 👆. I was initially surprised thinking Apple had removed these options, but glad they're still available.
I did prefer the old buttons along the bottom of the screen though.
