Hello,

I know there are various bug threads and I apologize if I am required to post this there. Just trying to get all the visibility to this bug that's driving me crazy.

I have a M2 14 MacBook Pro. It's literally brand new like two months old. Touch ID was flawless on Ventura but now there is an issue.

Basically, if I walk away from my computer for an undetermined amount of time. Could be 20 minutes. Could be 8 hours. It's requiring a password upon sign in to enable Touch ID again. It's like it's restarting without any error messages while I'm gone? After it goes to sleep?

Steps I've done.. a full new Sonoma install instead of just the upgrade.

I've disabled Touch ID, restarted the computer, and then re-enabled Touch ID.

To be clear Touch ID is working fine for Safari pages, and if I manually lock the computer and then sign back in, Touch ID works fine.

It's only causing an issue when I leave the computer sitting for a little bit and then return. I really think the computer is restarting when it wakes from sleep. The pages and everything seem like they're reloading when I return.

But the Terminal "Last Reboot" log isn't showing a restart??

Any ideas?

Ah, so it's a Sonoma issue, and not a hardware one ?

I recently replaced my iMac’s keyboard, under AppleCare, and immediately upgraded to Sonoma. The new keyboard's TouchID is flaky, but only over BlueTooth.

When it's wired, TouchID works perfectly, but over BlueTooth it works for a while until, as you say, twenty minutes or so, and then TouchID goes dead. I'd have to turn the keyboard OFF, and ON again to get it to work.

All other keys work perfectly whether wired or over BlueTooth.

Have you found a fix ?

Well TouchID's working for me now. I'm sure it'll turn flaky again after a reboot.

Rebooted.

Five hours later, and TouchID's still good. Will report back in case of turbulance.

It's been two weeks now. TouchID working perfectly without a single hitch whatsoever. So it was a Sonoma issue after all !

Wanted to update a couple things here. I did two things. First I updated the security module or whatever by holding down those three keys for 7 seconds.

Secondly, it looks like updating to Sonoma caused my system to turn on "Sign out after inactivity after X minutes"

So those two things together seemed to fix it. I am on Sonoma 14.1 and my problem is completely fixed now. Thank goodness.

What three keys? And note I still have this issue since Sonoma update, particularly when going between user accounts. It takes FOREVER with different techniques to try to have the Touch ID work for another user account while still keeping the other account open. Before it "flipped" the screen (visual effect) and you just signed in, now it doesn't it 1 out of 10 times correctly. So perhaps your "fix" will work for me as well. I've complained three time via feedback that they need to fix this bug and as of yet, it's not done. I figure the security issues were of greater priority and rightly so, but still this is a real, regular nuisance. Thanks for any help!
