So finally the Sony A9 has been announced. Twin card slots, better battery, blazing fast 20fps. Priced like a 1Dx/D5.

Whats everyones thoughts on it?

Also, a native 100-400mm solution announced for FE mount. THAT is of interest to me but the pricing is going nuts on the lenses. I imagine as this is a GMaster, then it is going to be pricey!

Really want a 400mm solution.

What do you guys think? Evolutionary or Revolutionary?

How did I know it would be you lusting after a new piece of tech!
Looks good on paper, but I'll not be jumping ship anytime soon.

Lol. Nope not really interested in the A9. Wondering if everyone else thinks the same.

The lens however is of interest as I am capped out at 200mm right now. A 200-400 option would be great

I prefer my 200-500! It does open up possibilities that you really needed £8k for not that long ago. I bet Nikon have sold more of that lens than many others this last year.

The solution I put to you a while ago takes the 70-200mm up to 340 (Oly 1.7x extender) with no loss of image quality, and as long as you don't go mad Clear Image View takes you a lot higher.
I would experiment with those cheaper options first and see how much you actually use the longer reach.

See, I'm helping you reign it in ;)

However I bet before 6 months are out you will have the A9 / 100-400mm combo anyway. Once started, GAS just eats away in people's mind until it wins.

Cheers :)

Either way, this camera is a beast and a trendsetter, photography will never be the same. Jason Lanier must be having a field day. The almost 700 AF focus points covering practically the entire frame are spectacular. However, other than those doing the bulk of their shoots in action and sports photography, some of the A9's capabilities are currently beyond what most Pros need.

Still, I do believe mirror-less cameras with electronic shutters and the new and (vastly) improved EVFs are the future. Say goodbye to noisy, clunky, mechanical mirrors and 150-200k lifespan shutters. Speaking about shutters, for all intents and purposes, the A9's blazingly fast electronic shutter should also pretty much eliminate rolling shutter. Looking forward to seeing high ISO, low-light performance tests.

I believe this is the direction where others will eventually follow. Now if only quality glass was a little less expensive.....

Yep. Agree with your re future and yes I am waiting to see pricing on the 100-400... bet it is going to be a big number comparable to the 70-200 GMaster.

Nah mate, happy with my A7Rii. When I use the 70-200 I am always using it at 135mm+ and there are some things that I want to bet able to reach to get the image. I think I looked at the Oly, doesnt it only have a 55mm filter thread? Are you using it on the 210mm eMount lens? the 72mm thread on the 70-200 is too big right?

Yes, I'm sorry I think I misled you - the Oly has a 52mm thread, so used with a 72-52 adapter gives a very slight vignette at 200mm. I think that's why I mentioned CIV.
I reckon it was better to use on the 55-210 which I sold ages ago to help fund the 70-200.
Please ignore my comments as I'm a silly old ****

Cheers :)

I have to admit here that the Voigtlander 15mm lived up to @kenoh and @MacRy 's expectations, so I've just bought a Mk III at a reasonable price to replace the Mk I that I will now be selling on.
I will also be selling all the other lenses I very seldom use to make up for it. That's the deal I've made with myself, anyway.

Cheers :)

Lol... It is a beautiful lens. There is a native E mount version but I went M mount for flexibility and maximum resale demographic if needed. For info if it helps, the V3 takes 58mm circular filters but as it is so wide, be careful as they will vignette a lot - which is cool if that is your thing. No point putting a polarizer on it as it causes a weird effect.

Also, I bought a cheap Canon lens cap for the front so I dont worry about losing the Voigtlander one. Voigtlander cap is £10 from Robert White, Canon ebay special £1.46 :)

£1.46. Be careful there. You might exceed your monthly budget!

It already comes with a 10 stop ND so no problem there, strangely enough also from Portugal like the first lens. Different seller though.

Cheers :)

I knew you'd like it. It's a real shame that the LTM version doesn't play nicely on full frame as I loved the size of it. Beautiful rendering though and you can zone focus it and basically use it like a point and shoot. I will buy a V3 one day when I've saved my pennies as I miss that little guy. Probably one of my all time favourite lenses.

It's a great camera, and instead of buying expensive lenses, try the e-mount to a-mount converter, then you can use any SONY/Minolta autofocus lens, including "mirror" telephoto lenses, ranging up to 1200 MM or so.

That was my previous plan. Either metabones plus canon 100-400 or a Sony A mount adapter and the 100-400 SSM G.

Both options carrying a circa £2K price tag. So not been enough of a priority. I guess if I have lasted this long then maybe I dont need it... :)

Spray and Pray! Sorry nothing except the viewfinder is appealing to me. $4,500 yet still 8bit color for video. Even if I was strictly into sports/wildlife stills I would want the larger files of the a7r2 for poster size images factoring in a little crop. And No USB-c?! This camera was made for fifty photographers who cover the Olympics and that's all.

the 400 zoom would of interested me before getting the 300 zoom but honestly for the size /cost I am really hoping a third party comes out with a 600 zoom as I find 600 to be a much better length if you need a telephoto.

Nothing special about that 100-400. It is not very fast. I will stick with my $1800 E-M1 II at 16fps and my 40-150 with TC that does F4 in the same effective focal length zoom range. BTW, my body and lens are weather sealed. Would you do this with the Sony?

I know. Seriously considering one for crappy weather use. Used my A7Rii in torrential rain and it survived.... So far....

Seriously like the idea of an E-M1 series camera though.
