SONY CEO tells investors Sony will sell 11.2 Billion in 3-D televisions in 2013. Hint

3-D television is going to be the next big thing, and it's going to be here sooner than you think. If SONY is expecting to sell $11.2 BILLION of 3-D televisions in 2013, then 3-D televisions will be popping up VERY soon.

Sony CEO revealed this information at Sony's earnings report to investors early this morning. Additoinally, he said that PlayStation game console 3-D game development is already under way and will be growing rapidly.

I'm no specialist in the area, but I just don't see it.

We're still in the middle of an economic disaster, countless people have just splurged for a new TV in recent years anyway to get HD (with many more still to make the jump as their old standard def sets are serving them well).

I'd be utterly amazed if that many people make another big purchase that they probably don't really need, all things considered.

I'm all for innovation but honestly if you ask most people "Would you buy a 3D TV?" they say "Didn't they try that decades ago?"

Not to mention show content would suffer from the overuse of 3D effects just like those theme park shows do.
 
But do 3D TVs require you to sit slap bang infont of them? Because I gotta say I don't live alone and I don't see myself forking out for 5 TV's aimed squarely at everyone.
 
What I saw from a CES video of the Sony concept 3D TV was that you have to wear slightly tinted glasses. This leads me to assume that they're doing it the way IMAX does: there are two images on the screen, one with all the light polarised in the vertical plane and the other polarised in the horizontal plane. Correspondingly the glasses have polaroid filters which allow only light from vertical in left (say) and horizontal in right.

If my deduction is correct, then no you won't have to sit square on, you'll just need multiple pairs of glasses with polarised lenses.
 
I couldn't see Sony selling many of these TV's without a decent supply of media to support it. Then will the 3D be HD or SD? With the push for Blu-ray that could matter in public perception as well.
 
I can say honestly I have no interest in 3-d TV, I've always seen it as a Gimmick, and being a glases wearer, hate wearing additional devices. HD Definately, but I cannot see the masses splurging in 3-D tech unless its just an add on to regular TV's , a mode they can be put into.

I saw Up using these polarised glasses a few weeks back, and found it quite frustrating. For me at least, you never see a perfect picture; there's a constant ghost so you're straining to focus on the image. (The same with the two-coloured goggles).

I'd love to have a high-quality 3D TV, but the technology just isn't there yet IMO. A true 3D FPS game would be amazing, but not if you have to go bug-eyed to view it.

Due to Channel 4 having a 3D week of viewing and Sainsburys giving away 3D glasses i downloaded and watched the 3D episode of Chuck..... Really not impressed. Not really bothered by 3D, it didn't increase my viewing pleasure. I'm happy enough with my HDTV.

I doubt that a Television requiring accessory glasses would EVER catch on.

Here is what I see happening....

A 3d television that does it all in the set. I remember hearing/reading something about a company developing a set that appears 3D without requiring the use of glasses.

THAT I would spring for.

Note: I dont think that regular broadcast TV/Movies will be improved by employing 3D technology. However, the GAMING industry? That can be the next big thing. I also think that the whole motion controlled thing (NATAL, Wii) will blow over. Stick with the controllers!
