Hello all,

well i'm in a bit of a pickle. My Sony Fontopia headphones (model MDREX71SL) i use with my iPod are experiencing a bad problem out of the 90 day warranty given. The white plastic itself that protects the wiring beneath is now peeling off, exposing the actual wire which scares me a lot. i haven't beaten them up at all, mere everyday use :(

I took the temporary solution of taping the wire so more doesn't occur/i don't get shocked if it gets wet or something. On Sony's website, i searched and it says my headphones are covered for an "Exchange Program." (specific page here). I was curious if anyone had ever used this service because it will cost me nearly $30 to replace these $50 headphones with refurbished ones that still may have cosmetic defects.

I spoke to Sony and they said that was all they could do for me. So should I do this or not bother and just get new headphones/use these until i can get new ones? If you think i should just get new buds, can you recommend some isolating ones (noise canceling) that are about $40-100?

Thanks for your help :)

Go for the Sennheiser CX300. They're $50 or under and have a 2-year warranty. The earphone type is near identical: 3 different silicone plugs and it sticks in your ear. You'll find that it's more efficient (louder) offers slightly better sound clarity all around than the Sony. The only major difference is the cable. No 'SL' short cable version is offered.

Thanks, im going to look at that and see if i can make a birthday request for those! They look very nice and seem to have gotten good reviews. Anyone else with ideas please let me know, i'm open to pretty much anything that is an earbud.
