It is well known that Android OEMs aren't capable of revolutionary engineering feats, needing huge phones and the respective huge batteries to have good battery life, while using generic components (qualcomm SoC, same amount of RAM as everybody else, same amount of onboard storage, etc.).

This is why companies like Samsung, that throw everything at the wall, doesn't give a shot at making a "decent" mini version. They can't.

Apple was untouched in that arena, but it is time to move on (go to bigger iPhones to have the benefits of bigger screens). Meanwhile, one Android OEM is doing the opposite: Making the best Android smartphone for the masses, from an engineering P.O.V.

Enter the Z3c, their latest iteration.

As you can see from that and other sources, the phone has the available top of the line components, with Sony's own 20.7 MP camera (maybe this time they unlocked the potential of their sensors), and a very sensitive decision: 720p screen.

But the deal is: It isn't much longer than the 5s (just a little bit, actually) and it has a 4,6" screen, while having a battery 2x the size of the one in the 5s. And the phone looks gorgeous, like a modern iPhone 4.

How did they do it? After looking at the dimensions, they realized that there are more important things than making a thinner phone for the sake of it. A great screen size on a decent sized phone is possible, you just have to set those priorities well.

I prefer iPhones, but this is great for everybody. It's a real challenge for the iPhone, from a former great company. It's certainly Sony's best phone ever. Let's just hope that Samsung keeps losing momentum and Sony keeps selling more devices. Maybe in a few months they can turn consistent profits.

I totally agree. I had all iPhone till 4s and then moved to Samsung with s3 and s4. However my next phone will be from Sony, possibly the z4...

Couldn't we say that Apple have been until now incapable of making larger screened phones.

I think the Android OEM's making large screened phones has had more to do with them actually adhering to what the market wants.

Sony do seem to have nailed the Z3 Compact.

The iPhone 6, Galaxy Alpha and Z3c seems to be the latest 4.7" wonderphones.

Looks good and backed up with more than enough specs.

Despite owning a phablet, I hope this sells big so we can move away from the ever-increasing screen size war.

Masterpiece ?

Well if my experience with the Z2 is anything to go by, 'masterpiece' will equate to an overheating device, with impractical flaps, a gimped 20mp camera that only shoots in 8mp with any mode selected and a ton of Sony bloat services.

As much as I like the look of the device, I do not trust Sony after the hype of the Z2 equating to nothing but a damp squib.

And their '6 month' refresh cycle on these Z devices - devalues their resale value considerably.

Making a larger screened phones is extremelly easy compared with doing the same in a 4" form factor. Also, Apple faces challenges that other OEMs don't.

They needed iOS 7 to eliminate useless textures and introduce the necessary changes so apps could be more flexible. But once the components are there in enough quantities, it's way easier to make bigger devices, especially with anything related with battery life.

But that wasn't the point of my post: focus on Sony.

Apple (particularly Steve Jobs) have always respected and admired Sony.

http://m.imore.com/steve-jobs-wanted-you-buy-sony-vaio-running-os-x

Sony was a great empire, once. Today they are just a shell of their former selves. Still, besides Apple, they are the only company that's more than the some of its parts. They just need their own OS.

Sony do seem to have nailed the Z3 Compact.

The iPhone 6, Galaxy Alpha and Z3c seems to be the latest 4.7" wonderphones.

I also believe that it is the "correct" size for the masses.

Looks good and backed up with more than enough specs.

Despite owning a phablet, I hope this sells big so we can move away from the ever-increasing screen size war.

Yeah. I also prefer a bigger device, but I understand that overall, this is the right size. (insert "that's what she said" joke :))

Compared with the alternatives, and the way they acted lately, Sony has a real chance to succeed. This truly looks like an amazing feat, doesn't it? I also had a bad experience with them in 2010.

That's a really nice looking phone, How are Sony when it comes to Android updates with Android L being around the corner?

Well, they became the most dev-friendly big OEM. They work closely with the folks at XDA (AFAIK) and they are seriously trying to bring every medium-to-highend device to 4.4.

Spoken like a true Apple fan huh? Android sucks except for Sony whom Steve admired right?....you lost all credibility after that....

What? Didn't you read the whole post?

And that paragraph has nothing to do with android directly. Seriously, take those blinders off.

Yeah I picked up a Z2 and gave it back pronto, a deceptively poor phone.

Still maintain that the Z1 Compact was very impressive, though.

Talk about blinders......
HTC One........ Note 3........Moto X....just 3 that popped in my head.
It will be nice to see Apple follow the competition into the larger screen phone space. They are 4 years late into this space. Maybe they can get the battery life right this time. The battery life on my IP5s isn't close to my HTC M8.

Got any factual evidence from no Apple fan sites to back up that claim? I fear not.

Anyway the screen res is too low on this phone if its true. And you do know this phone has not been officially announced yet right? Only leaked, in fact no one has announced the dimensions of the phone so where you got those from I have no idea. The only rumoured dimensions are for the Z3, not the Z3 compact.

They are not engineering feats at all. Putting something like the A7 on a phone with a 326 PPI, 4" screen and 1400 mAh battery is. The first iPhone was. Heck, maybe the G3 is, with that small form factor (for the huge screen). But I'm afraid that any drop will put the screen in a million pieces.

And yes, Apple is late to that space. But it was a bad business decision, obviously.

Don't worry, Apple will OWN that space in no time :)

I don't need facts from websites ABOUT THIS MATTER, when the evidence is there for us to see. Besides Sony's compact line, all the mini versions are weaker than the bigger brothers, because that is the only way to have decent battery life.

The screen resolution is perfect for this time. 316 PPI, more than the Galaxy S5 (if we do math right). Imagine the battery life!

The dimensions were posted in the comments/other articles.

How was the Z2 Ultra? I see that expansys-usa.com is selling the phone with a case for around $340. What stood out is the phone is almost 6.5".

Put down Android (the competition)

It is well known that Android OEMs aren't capable of revolutionary engineering feats

Say something negative about Samsung

This is why companies like Samsung, that throw everything at the wall, doesn't give a shot at making a "decent" mini version.

Got a link to show Sony is selling more devices?
I think comparing sales between the 2 companies says it all.

Let's just hope that Samsung keeps losing momentum and Sony keeps selling more devices.

The more I mess with different phones the more I realize how I would enjoy a waterproof type device.

Living in Florida I am constantly at the beach, pool, etc. and miss a ton of photo ops out of fear of dropping my phone in the water or something.

I just havent found the right device that has that on it that I really want.

I've never seen the z1c in person nor obviously the z3c but I am very interested in the device and hope it makes it to the states this time.

Probably won't buy this generation, but I like the product line.

The skin/ updates would be my biggest concern

Ah I see, so you have NO PROOF to back up your sensationalist claims then. I thought as much.
The new Z3 Compact will have the same SOC in it as the full size Z3 according to rumours, the only difference is the screen size and resolution, so the better battery life on the smaller phones does not come from weaker parts but Sony being clever with its tech, the Z3 is rumoured to have a 5.2". 1080P screen and 3100mah battery and the Z3 Compact will have a 4.6" 720P screen and 2600mah battery. And no, the dimensions have not been posted, place a link to a story that contains them...

Bigger fish to fry coming to market soon. If it is available in the states, I will take a peek but that probably is all seeing I have not owned a single Sony smartphone yet that I have looked into.

The skin/ updates would be my biggest concern

I had a Z1c for a few months this summer. It isn't the prettiest decide but not ugly either. It's not excessively thin so it felt good in hand and while it does have flaps to cover ports since it is dust/water resistant, it also came with a charging dock that utilizes the POGO pins on the side so no fiddling with the USB flap.

My gripes--screen isn't super bright, seemed slightly dimmer than other devices I've used recent (iPhones, HTC One M7) and it's bezels are a bit large. Sony's skin is fairly light (though not Moto X light) but as MRU mentioned, there is quite a bit of Sony software. Sony was pretty quick with the updates though--originally shipped with 4.3 (I believe) but was already on 4.4.2 when I picked it up early summer and I think it's on 4.4.3 now (don't own it anymore).

Overall a very good phone, and though fans of the Moto X will likely disagree, I think it's probably the best overall small to midsized Android device available. I'd take the software experience of the Moto X (including active notifications) but otherwise, the additional functionality offered by the Z1c (water resistance, expandable memory, LCD display, better camera) would give it an ever so slight edge.

Talking about the phone, it does seem rather nice, I had several Sony Ericsson phones back in the day and they were always pretty good, the P800 was a popular funky smartphone of the time.
I was never interested in their Android phones as they were too big or not powerful enough, I was going to get the Z1C but instead got a Nexus 5, I however will be comparing the camera on this new Z3C very closely to the Nexus 5, also the battery life. Usually it is fine but if you use e Nexus for photos and HD video it can run flat after a few hours.

It's just that screen resolution....

I am however set, if it's announced, to replace my 2012 Nexus 7 with the new Z3 Tablet Compact that's rumoured, 8" screen in a nice compact size with water and dust proofing, a Snapdragon 801 with 3Gb ram, expandable memory.. Oh yes :)
