It is well known that Android OEMs aren't capable of revolutionary engineering feats, needing huge phones and the respective huge batteries to have good battery life, while using generic components (qualcomm SoC, same amount of RAM as everybody else, same amount of onboard storage, etc.).
This is why companies like Samsung, that throw everything at the wall, doesn't give a shot at making a "decent" mini version. They can't.
Apple was untouched in that arena, but it is time to move on (go to bigger iPhones to have the benefits of bigger screens). Meanwhile, one Android OEM is doing the opposite: Making the best Android smartphone for the masses, from an engineering P.O.V.
Enter the Z3c, their latest iteration.

As you can see from that and other sources, the phone has the available top of the line components, with Sony's own 20.7 MP camera (maybe this time they unlocked the potential of their sensors), and a very sensitive decision: 720p screen.
But the deal is: It isn't much longer than the 5s (just a little bit, actually) and it has a 4,6" screen, while having a battery 2x the size of the one in the 5s. And the phone looks gorgeous, like a modern iPhone 4.
How did they do it? After looking at the dimensions, they realized that there are more important things than making a thinner phone for the sake of it. A great screen size on a decent sized phone is possible, you just have to set those priorities well.
I prefer iPhones, but this is great for everybody. It's a real challenge for the iPhone, from a former great company. It's certainly Sony's best phone ever. Let's just hope that Samsung keeps losing momentum and Sony keeps selling more devices. Maybe in a few months they can turn consistent profits.
